Assam is classified into six agro-climatic areas called the North Bank Plains Zone, Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone, Central Brahmaputra Valley Zone, Lower Brahmaputra Valley Zone, Barak Valley Zone and Hills Zone.

- North Bank Plains Zone contains the districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang and Udalguri.
- Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Majuli and Golaghat are located in the zone known as Upper Brahmaputra Valley.
- Central Brahmaputra Valley Zone is found in Nagaon and Morigaon.
- In the Lower Brahmaputra Valley Zone, you can find the regions of Kamrup, Borpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Goalpara, Dhubri and Kokrajhar.
- Barak Valley Zone is made up of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj.
- Karbi Anglong and North Cachar hills are found in the Hills Temperate Zone.
