The Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation Society, or APFBC Society for short, was established by the State Government of Assam as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. This Society is tasked with the important job of planning, implementing, monitoring, coordinating, and managing all activities outlined in the project.
Goal
The APFBC Society is all about successfully blending sustainable forest management practices with a strong focus on boosting income and securing the livelihoods of communities that rely on forests. Their main goals include restoring forest ecosystems in partnership with these communities, improving their quality of life, and ensuring that biodiversity is both conserved and used sustainably.
Strategy
The Environment & Forest Department, Assam, recognizes the fact that sustainable forest management demands ‘coming and working together’ of forest dependent communities and other stakeholders to bridge the gap between the project and communities, therefore the project has active participation of all stakeholders.
Activities
The project aims to carry out a variety of activities, including building the capacity of forest department staff, upgrading the infrastructure and equipment of the Forest Department, and enhancing income generation and livelihood security for communities that rely on forests. The Society was established on June 28, 2012.
