Asian Waterbird Census 2026 at Pobitora

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary authority conducted the Asian Waterbird Census 2026 over two days in collaboration with Aaranyak and the Assam Bird Monitoring Network. The exercise aimed to assess wetland health and seasonal bird diversity.

The census was organised by the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary authority in collaboration with Aaranyak, the Assam Bird Monitoring Network, local bird experts, students, and the Pobitora Jeep Safari Owners’ Association, Mayong.

The survey teams monitored 13 water bodies and beels within the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. The latest bird census reportedly witnessed an increase in the numbers of bird species, revealing a thriving ecosystem.

Migratory Species Spotted: 

Several notable species were recorded during the survey, including:

  • Lesser and Greater White-fronted Goose
  • Falcated Duck and Tufted Duck
  • Bar-headed Goose and Greylag Goose
  • Northern Pintail and Northern Shoveler
  • Pied Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, and Northern Lapwing
