Bhortal Nritya - Folk Dance Form

Originating from the Barpeta district in Assam, India, Bhortal Nritya is a beloved and unique folk dance form. Developed by Narahari Burha Bhakat, this dance is known for its energetic rhythm, the sound of cymbals, and its enchanting circular patterns.

Origin and Development: Bhortal Nritya is said to have evolved from the classical dance forms of Barpeta district in Assam and was developed by Narahari Burha Bhakat, a well-known Satriya artist

Performance Style:

  • Typically, this dance is done in a group of about six or seven dancers, but it can also accommodate larger crowds.
  • The dance is characterized by a fast-paced beat known as “Zhiya Nom”. 
  • Dancers use large cymbals, called bhortals, and they move in a circular motion, forming colorful shapes.
  • The whole performance is beautifully complemented by Vaishnavite bhakti songs.
