Conrad Sangma sworn-in as Meghalaya Chief Minister for 2nd term

Conrad Sangma sworn-in as Meghalaya Chief Minister: Conrad Kongkal Sangma was sworn in as chief minister of Meghalaya for the second time in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Governor Phagu Chauhan, along with his two deputies Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhaland Dhar, and nine other ministers, administered the oath of office to Sangma. Sangma won from the South Tura constituency with a margin of 5,016 against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bernard N Marak, as per the data shared by the Election Commission of India on March 2.

58 newly elected MLAs were sworn in as assembly members with pro-tem speaker Timothy D Shira administering the oath of office and secrecy to them. The new government, which will be called the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance 2.0, has one woman minister in M Ampareen Lyngdoh. Other members of the new cabinet include Rakkam A Sangma, Marcuise M Marak, AT Mondal and Comingone Ymbon, all from Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP).

United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 seats in the results of assembly polls announced on Thursday. Congress won five seats. Trinamool Congress received five seats as well, despite having inducted all Congress MLAs in the previous assembly. In all seven other MLAs from the National People’s Party (NPP), two from the UDP and one each from BJP and HSPDP were also administered the oath of secrecy as members in Sangma’s cabinet by Governor Phagu Chauhan at Raj Bhavan.
