Himachal Pradesh govt signs MoU for development of seven ropeway projects

Himachal Pradesh government has signed an MoU for the development of seven ropeway projects in Kangra, Kullu, Chamba, Sirmour and Bilaspur districts.

The MoU was signed between Ropeways and Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC) HP Limited and National Highways Logistic Management Limited (NHLML).

The MoU was signed in the presence of road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Jai Ram Thakur in New Delhi.

Molecular biophysicist and structural biologist professor Mamannamana Vijayan passed away at 80 in Bengaluru. He was a former president of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) from 2008 to 2010.

He has been honoured with SS Bhatnagar Award, Ranbaxy Award, OP Bhasin Award, and also the first GN Ramachandran Medal by Indian Science Congress Association and was also awarded Padma Shri in 2004.

Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 amended to promote Make in India

To promote Make in India initiative in defence the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 has been amended based on the approvals accorded by Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).

Import of defence equipment has to be undertaken with specific approval of DAC/Raksha Mantri. The defence ministry also cut the waiting time for projects under the iDEX framework. The timelines in the Make-II procedure will be reduced to 101-109 weeks from 122-180 weeks.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India’s military expenditure is the third highest in the world behind the US and China.

Military spending in India is amounting to $76.6 billion in 2021 which grew by 0.9% from 2020. Russia has also increased its military expenditure for the third consecutive year.

Airtel Payments Bank offers FD Facility with IndusInd Bank

Airtel Payments Bank has partnered with IndusInd Bank to offer fixed deposit (FD) facilities to its customers. A customer can open FD of Rs 500 up to Rs 190,000 on the Airtel Thanks app.

With this partnership, customers of Airtel Payments Bank savings account will get an interest rate of up to 6.5 %p.a. and senior citizens will get an additional 0.5% on all fixed deposits. Customers can book multiple FDs for a fixed duration of either 1, 2 or 3 years.

World Bank provides USD 600 million in financial assistance to Sri Lanka

The World Bank will provide financial assistance to Sri Lanka of USD 600 dollars to meet the payment requirements for essential imports. Sri Lanka has also talked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance, but the country needs 3 to 4 billion dollars in bridge financing to help meet its essential expenses.

India has helped Sri Lanka by assisting with USD 1.9 billion. Sri Lanka President: Gotabaya Rajapaksa; Prime minister: Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Former women's hockey team captain Elvera Britto dies

Former Indian women’s hockey team captain, Elvera Britto has passed away at 81 due to old-age-related problems. Elvera led Karnataka’s domestic team to win seven national titles. She ruled the domestic circuit from 1960 to 1967.

She also represented India against Japan, Sri Lanka, and Australia. She is the second women hockey player to be conferred with the Arjuna Award(1965) after Anne Lumsden.

Jharkhand’s Jamtara became country’s 1st district with library in every village

Jamtara in Jharkhand has become the only district in the country where all gram panchayats have community libraries.

This district, which has a population of about eight lakh people, has 118 gram panchayats divided into six blocks, and each panchayat has a well-equipped library open to students from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Career counselling sessions and motivational classes are also held free of cost here. Sometimes, IAS and IPS officers also visit these libraries to guide students. Everyone is welcome to visit these innovative sites.

Gradually, libraries were set up in panchayats such as Chandradeep, Panjaniya, Menjhia, Gopalpur, Shaharpura, Champapur, and Jhilua. The villagers elected a President, Treasurer, and Librarian from amongst themselves, to run these libraries.

SIPRI’s “Trends in World Military Expenditure report 2021″: India ranked 3rd According to the Sweden-based think-tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report, titled “Trends in World Military Expenditure Report 2021”, India’s military expenditure is the third highest in the world behind the US and China. Military spending in India is amounting to $76.6 billion in 2021 which grew by 0.9% from 2020. Russia has also increased its military expenditure for the third consecutive year.

The report’s data is based upon the updated SIPRI Military Expenditure Database, which provides military spending data by country for the years 1949–2021. The five largest spenders in 2021 were the US, China, India, the UK (United Kingdom) and Russia, together accounting for 62% of expenditure.

ABPMJAY- SEHAT scheme: Samba becomes 1st district to cover 100% households

In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Samba district of Jammu division has become the first district in India to cover 100% households under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPMJAY)- SEHAT scheme. The district achieved this milestone after the conclusion of a special registration drive organized by the State Health Agency (SHA) from April 11 to April 21 in all BDO offices across the district which was aimed to cover all families under the ABPMJAY SEHAT scheme in the district.

The Samba district has a total of 62,641 families with 3,04,510 people eligible for ABPM-JAY SEHAT golden cards. However, 100% family coverage for the Ayushman Bharat Golden card in the district is a major achievement for the UT Government. This ambitious health insurance scheme enables all the residents of J&K including employees and pensioners as well as their families to avail of cashless quality healthcare services across public and empanelled private hospitals across India.

TCS’ Krishnan Ramanujam appointed as Nasscom Chairperson for 2022-23

IT industry body National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has appointed Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) Krishnan Ramanujam as its chairperson for 2022-23.
Krishnan, who is president – enterprise growth group at TCS, was earlier vice-chairperson of Nasscom. Ramanujam succeeds Rekha M. Menon, Chairperson and Senior Managing Director of Accenture in India, in this role.

Nasscom also announced the appointment of Anant Maheshwari, President, Microsoft India, as its Vice-Chairperson for 2022-23. Maheshwari will succeed Ramanujam in this role.

The new Nasscom leadership, along with President Debjani Ghosh, will lead the industry body to carry out its diverse array of priorities to achieve the 2025 vision for the industry. In line with the changing industry landscape, the key priorities will be to re-align and re-calibrate the course of the technology industry to maximise growth from technology potential to technology impact, reimagine India as the preferred hub for digital talent, innovation and impact at scale, and shape the next frontiers of digital next to catalyse future-readiness for the techade.

Asian Wrestling Championships 2022: India finished with 17 medals

Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia won the men’s freestyle 86kg silver while Viky bagged a bronze in the 92kg category at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2022 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. With the two medals on the final day of the meet, India finished with a total tally of 17 medals, one gold, five silvers and 11 bronze, at Ulaanbaatar. Tokyo medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the solitary gold in the men’s 57kg weight class.

Ravi Kumar became the first Indian to win 3 Gold medals in Asian Wrestling Championships which includes 2020 in New Delhi, India, 2021 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and 2022 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia respectively.

UP’s Agra becomes first city to have vacuum-based sewer systems

The city of Taj Mahal, Agra, has become the first city in the country to have vacuum-based sewers. These vacuums will be used in public places. Agra Smart City officials told India Today that the corporation has connected 240 such houses near the Taj Mahal with vacuum-based sewer where conventional sewer systems can not be used.

The work of sewer connection is estimated at Rs 100 crore. Presently, this technology is being used in low-lying areas. The Maintenance and complete care will be done by the Netherlands company for up to five years. A vacuum sewer network of 240 houses has been constructed at Rs 5 crore. All the chambers are equipped with geographic information system (GIS) based sensors, which will help pinpoint the area of the chamber and the problem.
