Indian Coast Guard 47th Raising Day: On February 1st 2023, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will commemorate its 47th Raising Day. The ICG has grown significantly since its humble beginnings in 1978 with just seven surface platforms. It now has 158 ships and 78 aircraft, and it is anticipated that it will reach its target force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025. As the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, the Indian Coast Guard has played a significant role in securing the Indian Coasts and enforcing regulations in the Maritime Zones of India. The Indian Parliament’s Coast Guard Act of 1978 officially founded the ICG on February 1st, 1977.  it operates,Under the Ministry of Defense.

History of Coast Guard Day:

The history of Indian Coast Guard Day can be traced back to 1 February 1977, when the Parliament of India passed the Coast Guard Act, 1978. The organisation was created with the intention of running under the Ministry of Defense.  On 19 August 1978, then-President Morarji Desai officially launched the organization with just seven ships.

Indian Coast Guard Day is a celebration of the fourth most powerful Coast Guard in the world. It is also a day to celebrate the achievements of the organization. We must all remember to honour the service of the organization on Indian Coast Guard Day 2023.

Former Union law minister and eminent jurist Shanti Bhushan: Shanti Bhushan, a famous lawyer and former Union law minister, died at the age of 97. He served as the law minister in the Morarji Desai-led Janata Party government from 1977 to 1979, which came to power after Emergency. GST collection at nearly Rs 1.56 lakh crore in January: Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, claims that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection increased significantly in January 2023, hitting more than Rs 1.55 lakh crore. This represents the second-highest mop-up for the GST collection in history and shows that the economy of the country is growing. The GST collection for January 2023 has reached over the ₹1.50 lakh crore mark for the third time this financial year, and is only second to the highest collection of ₹1.68 lakh crore in April 2022. The revenues for the current financial year up to January 2023 are 24% higher than the GST revenues during the same period last year.

  • The total amount collected was 1,55,922 crore, which was made up of 10,630 crore in cess, 36,730 crore in state GST, 28,963 crore in central GST, and 79,599 crore in integrated GST.
  • The IGST collection also included ₹37,118 crore collected on the import of goods and the cess collection included ₹768 crore collected on the import of goods.
  • The increase in GST collection is a positive sign for the Indian economy and shows the growth of the country’s tax system.

In the October-December 2022 quarter, a total of 2.42 crore GST returns were filed compared to 2.19 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. This improvement in compliance is a result of various policy changes introduced throughout the year.

This is the first time that he has made a mention of the capital in his last three years in office. He had been calling Visakhapatnam the executive capital. This time he used the word “capital”, and not “executive capital”. The announcement of Visakhapatnam, a new capital for Andhra comes nine years after the state of Telangana was carved out of its territory and given Hyderabad as its capital.

At the International Diplomatic Alliance meet in Delhi CM Jagan urged investors to ‘visit Visakhapatnam  and see how easy it is do to business in the state of Andhra Pradesh‘.

In March last year, the Andhra Pradesh High Court had ruled against the proposal to establish three capitals in the state and directed the YSRC government to develop Amaravati as the state capital as envisaged. The Court had also in its verdict on March 3, 2022 said the state Legislature lacked competence to make any legislation for shifting, bifurcating or trifurcating the capital.

The state government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court order.

A Rich History of Visakhapatnam:

  • According to Vizag port website, the city, which is home to the headquarters of Eastern Naval Command had trade relations with the Middle East and Rome during ancient times and in 1682 it became a settlement of a branch of East India Company.
  • On December 19, 1933, Lord Willingdon, the Indian Viceroy and Governor General at the time, officially opened the Visakhapatnam Port.
  • The city shot into limelight after the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi laid foundation stone for a Steel Plant which was dedicated to the nation by former PM PV Narasimha Rao in 1992 after the facility started production.

Significance of This Development:

According to a study by Andhra University, the population of Vizag will grow to 30 lakh by 2035 from 23.5 lakh in 2021. Visakhapatnam has necessary infrastructure like international airport, road and port connectivity which is important for the capital city.

The announcement that Visakhapatnam, nicknamed “City of Destiny,” would be the new state capital, has elicited mixed response from different sections of people in the city.

Former chairman of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI) Visakhapatnam chamber G.V Satyanarayana hailed Jagan’s announcement. The real estate industry will have a good future once the capital is established in Visakhapatnam.

Assam cabinet approves floriculture mission: The Assam Cabinet, headed by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a state floriculture mission with an initial investment of Rs 150 crore that covers 20,000 farmers.

Several other important decisions were taken at the cabinet meeting, including setting up of an additional CM secretariat at Dibrugarh, a new Raj Bhavan at Tezpur and converting employment exchanges into youth welfare offices, he said.
