International Day for Disaster Reduction - 13 October

The United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction is held each year on 13 October since 1989. The Day celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.

The theme of the 2021 International Day for Disaster Reduction is “International cooperation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses”.

Arvind Kejriwal launches ‘Desh Ke Mentor’ Programme

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a programme under which students of classes 9 to 12 of Delhi government schools will be guided by dedicated mentors in exploring diverse career and life options.

The ‘Desh ke mentor’ programme entails ‘adopting’ one to 10 government school students who can be mentored by citizens who are successful in their respective fields. The Delhi government had in August announced that Bollywood actor Sonu Sood will be the brand ambassador for the mentors’ programme.

The function of “Desh ke mentor’ programme:

Mentors will take out 10 minutes every week to guide students over the phone. Interested citizens can adopt between one to 10 children studying in the city’s government schools as part of the initiative.

FIFA unveils “Ibha” mascot of India’s 2022 U-17 Women’s World Cup

The World football governing body, FIFA unveiled the official mascot of the U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 on October 11, 2021. The tournament will be the 7th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. It will be held in India from October 11-30, next year. The announcement coincided with the International Day of the Girl Child. The mascot named “IBHA” is an Asiatic lioness representing women’s power. It aims to inspire women and girls across the world to take the right decisions and reach their full potential.

According to a release issued by the global body, Ibha aims to inspire women and girls across India and around the world to realise their potential. Ibha is a strong, playful, and charming Asiatic lioness that aims to inspire and encourage women and girls by using teamwork, resilience, kindness, and empowering others.

K V Subramanian resigned as Chief Economic Adviser

Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India has resigned from the post. According to the information, he has decided to return to the education world after completing his 3-year term as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India. KV Subramanian had taken over the charge of Chief Economic Adviser on December 7, 2018. The appointment was made nearly five months after his predecessor Arvind Subramanian had stepped down.

KV Subramanian, earlier in his career, had been part of the expert committees for the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Subramanian has also been well-versed with the private sector, with brief stints in top corporates including ICICI Bank, JPMorgan Chase, and Tata Consultancy Services.

GoI launched ‘My Port App’ for digital monitoring of port operations

The central government has started ‘My Port App’ in Kolkata for digital monitoring of port operations. It has been launched to promote transparency and provide port-related information. The app has been launched for port users who want to use various port services. It contains all the facts about the port digitally.

“The app also has various information like vessel berthing, rake & indent, rake receipt, container status, tariff, bills, Port holidays, etc., and can be accessed anywhere 24×7 and reach out directly to the port.”
Eight High Courts to get new Chief Justices

President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the appointment of chief justices to eight high courts in the country. The President also approved the transfer of five chief justices to different high courts. The clearance in the 13 High Courts was considered crucial as some of them have been making do with Acting Chief Justices. On August 17, a five-member Supreme Court collegium had recommended nine names for elevation as judges of Supreme Court at one go.

Five Chief Justices have been transferred:

  • The government cleared the transfer of Tripura High Court Chief Justice A.A. Kureshi to the Rajasthan High Court.
  • Justice Indrajit Mahanty, Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, would take over as Tripura Chief Justice.
  • Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq of Madhya Pradesh has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder of the Meghalaya High Court has been transferred as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court.
  • Justice A.K. Goswami has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court. He is presently the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Newly appointed Chief Justice:

  • Justice Rajesh Bindal, Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
  • Justice Ranjit V. More has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
  • Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
  • Justice Prakash Srivastava, a Madhya Pradesh High Court judge, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
  • Justice R.V. Malimath has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
  • Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court.
  • Justice Aravind Kumar has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
  • Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra would take over as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
Indian Shooters win 43 medals at ISSF Junior World Championship

The 2021 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun was held at Lima in Peru. The Indian shooters claimed a historic win with 43 medals including 17 gold, 16 silver, and 10 bronze, India has topped the table ending the Championship on a high. The USA finished second on the medal table with 21 medals including six gold, eight silver, and six bronze.

Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker broke the record of winning the highest number of medals in the championship, with as many as five medals. This included 4 gold medals and a bronze. She participated in five events and won medals in all of them, 10m air pistol, 25m sports pistol, 10m air pistol mixed team, 10m women’s team, and 25m women’s team.

BharatPe appoints former SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar as its chairman

BharatPe has appointed former SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar as chairman of the board, the fintech startup said on October 12, 2021.

As the Chairman, Kumar will be responsible to:

  • Mentor the BharatPe team in formulating short-term and long-term strategy
  • Work closely with the board and executives on regulatory matters
  • Advice and counsel the management on corporate governance
IFFCO chairman Balvinder Singh Nakai passes away

The Chairman of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Sardar Balvinder Singh Nakai, has passed away. He was born on December 5, 1934. He was 87 years old.

Balvinder Singh Nakai was appointed as the new Chairman of IFFCO in May 2019. IFFCO is a multi-state cooperative society engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing of fertilisers. Its headquarter is in New Delhi.

Adani Group takes over operational control of Jaipur International Airport from AAI

India’s Adani Group has reportedly taken over the management of Jaipur International Airport (JIA) in the state of Rajasthan from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which manages civil aviation infrastructure in the country.

The company assumed the operations in the early hours of Monday (11 October 2021), after the airport director J S Balhara gave airports symbolic key to Adani Jaipur International chief airport officer Vishnu Jha.

Jaipur airport has been leased out to Adani Group for 50 years by the Government of India. Adani Airports will work on the operations, management, and development of the Jaipur airport through PPP mode.

The first flight after the takeover was from Delhi to Jaipur. The group will take over the control of the entire facility except for the cargo terminal, Air Traffic Control (ATC), and Communication, Navigation & Surveillance (CNS), which will continue to be operated by AAI. The private group Adani will have to develop their own cargo terminal.

PM Narendra Modi addresses 28th NHRC Foundation Day programme

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the 28th NHRC Foundation Day programme, through video conferencing on October 12, 2021, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and NHRC chairperson.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a Statutory public body constituted on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, for the promotion and protection of human rights and dignity of the marginalised.

The Prime Minister concluded by mentioning the human rights of future generations. He emphasized that with measures like International Solar Alliance, renewable energy goals, and Hydrogen Mission, India is rapidly moving in the direction of sustainable life and eco-friendly growth.

Germany launches World’s First Self-Driving Train

World’s First Self-Driving Train: German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and German engineering company Siemens launched the world’s first automatic and driverless train on October 11, 2021, in the German city of Hamburg. This self-driving train was launched in the city of Hamburg.

This project is being developed by ‘Siemens and Deutsche Bahn’. It is being dubbed as “world-first”. The project is part of a 60-million-euro modernisation of the rapid urban rail system of Hamburg. These automated trains will offer a reliable service without laying a single kilometre of new track.

IEA invites India to become a full-time member

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has invited India, the world’s third-largest energy consumer, to become its full-time member. 

This membership invitation was given in the light that, India is the world’s third-largest energy consumer. If this proposal is accepted, it will require India to increase its strategic oil reserve to 90 days requirement. India’s current strategic oil reserves equal 9.5 days of its requirement.

Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri held discussions with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. During the discussion, IEA executive director invited India to deepen its cooperation with IEA by becoming its full member.

EESL appoints Arun Kumar Mishra as CEO

Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL), a joint venture of NTPC Ltd and Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd, has appointed Arun Kumar Mishra as chief executive officer (CEO) on deputation. He will be responsible for EESL’s operations across the nation.

Mishra in the statement said, “It is an honour to be a part of the world’s largest public energy service company. The government has acknowledged the potential of renewable energy… I look forward to consolidating EESL leadership position in sustainable energy transformation.”
