Centre accords “Maharatna” status to state-owned PFC Ltd.

Govt. of India has accorded ‘Maharatna’ status to the state-owned Power Finance Corporation Ltd (PFC) on October 12, 2021, thus giving PFC greater operational and financial autonomy. In order to this effect was issued by the Department of Public Enterprises, under the Ministry of Finance. PFC was incorporated in 1986, as an Indian financial institution under the ownership of the Ministry of Power. It is the largest Infrastructure Finance Company in India, exclusively dedicated to Power Sector.

PM Modi inaugurates Rs 100 lakh crore PM Gati Shakti-National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the highly-spoken of PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity at Pragati Maidan in the national capital on October 13, 2021. The Rs 100 lakh crore PM Gati Shakti-National Master Plan aims to provide multi-modal connectivity that aims to develop infrastructure to reduce logistic costs and boost the economy.

Highlighting the importance of the plan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan is going to take India’s self-confidence, self-confidence, to the resolve of self-reliance. This National Masterplan will give impetus to 21st century India.”

Under the new project a centralised portal will be set up to bring together the infrastructure schemes (which are to be completed by 2024-25) of as many as 16 Ministries & State Governments on a common platform, for integrated planning and coordinated implementation, instead of planning & designing separately by each ministry and department.

PM Modi also inaugurated the new exhibition complexes of ITPO and reviewed the model of the new exhibition complex at Pragati Maidan.

India approves USD 200 million Line of Credit to support development projects in Kyrgyzstan

India has approved to provide a $200 million Line of Credit support for development projects in Kyrgyzstan, as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held “cordial and constructive” talks with his Kyrgyz counterpart Ruslan Kazakbaev on a wide range of bilateral and global issues, including Afghanistan.

The two nations also signed an MoU on High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP)” to enable implementation of quick community development projects in various sectors for the benefit of common people under full grant funding by the Government of India.

It must be noted that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is on a four-day visit to Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Armenia to further expand bilateral ties with the three Central Asian countries.

IMF Projects Indian Economy to grow at 9.5% in FY22; Global economy at 5.9% in 2021

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has estimated the Indian economy to grow by 9.5% in the current fiscal year, i.e 2021-22 (FY22), and the multilateral organization in its latest World Economic Outlook report released on October 12, 2021, has projected India’s economy to grow 8.5% in FY23.

Meanwhile, IMF expects the global gross domestic product (GDP) to grow by 5.9 percent in 2021 and 4.9% in 2022.

ADB Raises 2019–2030 Climate Financing Goal to $100 Billion

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced it is elevating its ambition to deliver climate financing to its developing member countries (DMCs) to $100 billion from 2019–2030. 

Earlier in 2018, ADB had announced an $80 billion goal for climate financing for developing countries in Asia during 2019-2030. The additional $20 billion in financing support will be used for climate mitigation efforts including low-carbon energy sources, climate adaptation projects, and private sector projects.

Former I&B and Higher Education Secretary Amit Khare Appointed Advisor to PM Modi

Former information & broadcasting and higher education secretary Amit Khare has been appointed as the new adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 12, 2021. Khare has been appointed on a contractual basis for two years. He is a 1985-batch IAS officer from Bihar- Jharkhand cadre. He has been appointed for a period of two years on a contractual basis as Advisor to the Prime Minister in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

International E-Waste Day: 14 October

The International E-Waste Day (IEWD) is celebrated on 14 October every year since 2018, to promote the correct disposal of e-waste throughout the world with the aim to increase re-use, recovery, and recycling rates. The international day of e-waste organized by the WEEE Forum, the European association of Collective WEEE Management Systems which brings together members from over 40 countries. 2021 is the fourth edition of the International E-Waste Day. This year’s International E-Waste Day will focus on the crucial part each of us has in making circularity a reality for e-products.

The theme for 2021 IEWD is “Consumer is the key to Circular Economy!”. The day was developed in 2018 by the WEEE Forum, an international association of e-waste collection schemes, with the support of its members.

World Standards Day: 14 October

World Standards Day (WSD) (also known as International Standards Day) is celebrated globally on 14 October annually. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of standardization to the global economy among consumers, regulators, and industry.

World Standards Day 2021 theme is “Standards for sustainable development goals – shared vision for a better world”.

Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index

India has retained the 3rd rank in the 58th Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index (RECAI) released by the consultancy firm Ernst & Young (EY). According to the report, the US, mainland China, and India continue to retain the top three rankings and Indonesia is a new entrant to the RECAI.

The 2021 RECAI ranks the world’s top 40 global markets (nations) on the attractiveness of their renewable energy investment and deployment opportunities. With the environment, social, and governance (ESG) measures soaring to the top of the agenda for companies and investors, RECAI also highlights that corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) are emerging as a key driver of clean energy growth.

IFFCO chairman Sardar Balvinder Singh Nakai passes away

Fertiliser major IFFCO’s Chairman Balvinder Singh Nakai, 87, passed away. He was born on December 5, 1934. He was an eminent farmer – cooperator and was deeply involved in providing strength to the Indian cooperative movement for the last three decades. He made pioneering contributions towards empowering farmers.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd (KMBL) launch Micro ATMs across the country. Customers of all banks who possess a debit card can use a Kotak Micro ATM for key banking services such as cash withdrawals and checking account balances. A mini version of an ATM, micro ATMs is small handheld devices. The bank will use its extensive Business Correspondents (BC) network to launch micro ATMs.

In the first phase, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd is introducing micro ATMs in the outskirts of the top 8 metro cities – locations where the demand for cash withdrawal services is high but the prevalence of ATMs is low.

About the Micro ATM:

  • The micro ATM is a simple, innovative and highly effective solution to deliver essential banking services such as cash withdrawals in a convenient manner to people residing in relatively remote locations.
  • It is a viable alternative to a regular ATM, allowing for faster expansion and increasing banking touchpoints for consumers. Kotak’s network of micro ATMs across the country will help customers of all banks (Kotak and non-Kotak customers) get easy access to their bank accounts and promote financial inclusion.”
India’s first Atal Community Innovation Center launched in Jaipur

India’s first Atal Community Innovation Center (ACIC) was inaugurated at Vivekananda Global University, Jaipur (VGU). Shri Onkar Bagaria, CEO – VGU, greeted all the guests and, in his address, said that it will be the first center in the country to be set up by the Government of India, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), and NITI Aayog.

Chief Guest, Dr. Chintan Vaishnav, Director, AIM, NITI Aayog, Government of India, inaugurated the program.

Sajjan Jindal appointed chairman of World Steel Association

The World Steel Association (WSA) has elected JSW Steel Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal as its Chairman for the 2021-22 period. With this, Jindal becomes the first representative from India to serve as Chairman of the WSA. JSW Steel is the flagship business of the diversified $13 billion JSW Group and is engaged in the manufacturing of iron and steel products in India and across the globe.

The association has also appointed Tata Steel CEO T V Narendran and ArcelorMittal Chief L N Mittal to the Executive Committee.

Hospitality firm OYO has appointed Paralympian Deepa Malik as an Indian athlete and a silver-medalist at the 2016 Paralympic Games, as an independent director on the company’s board.

Oravel Stays Ltd (OYO) has appointed Deepa Malik, an Indian athlete and a silver-medalist at the 2016 Paralympic Games, as an independent director on the company’s board of directors as of September 26, 2021, the company said in a statement.

Malik’s experience and her passion for travel and adventure would be invaluable for OYO for years to come. Malik joins the board of OYO that has three other independent directors and one nominee director, besides Ritesh Agarwal being the chairman.
