Manappuram Finance fined Rs 17.63 lakh by the RBI for failing to comply with KYC regulations

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said  it has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 17.63 lakh on Manappuram Finance Limited for non-compliance of norms related to Know Your Customer (KYC) and Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs).

KEY POINTS:

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalty of Rs 17,63,965 on Manappuram Finance Limited for non-compliance with certain provisions of the Master Direction on Issuance and Operation of Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) dated October 11, 2017 (updated as on February 28, 2020) and the Master Direction – Know Your Customer (KYC) Direction dated February 25, 2016 (as updated on April 20, 2020).
  • This action is based on regulatory compliance issues and is not meant to be a judgement on the validity of any transaction or agreement the organisation has with its consumers.
  • The entity was found to be in violation of RBI instructions on KYC and minor PPI standards. As a result, the entity was given notice to show cause why a penalty should not be applied for failing to follow the orders.

RBI found that the aforementioned accusation of non-compliance with its orders was proven and warranted imposition of monetary penalty after reviewing the entity’s answer and giving it a personal hearing.

LV Vaidyanathan appointed CEO of P&G India

LV Vaidyanathan appointed CEO of P&G India

Procter & Gamble said LV Vaidyanathan, head of its Indonesian business will replace Madhusudan Gopalan as its India chief executive. Vaidyanathan takes over as the CEO from July 1, 2022. The change is effective from July 1, the maker of Olay skin cream and Tide detergent said on Tuesday in a statement.

Career of LV Vaidyanathan:

Vaidyanathan completed his Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical) from the National Institute of Technology, Nagpur and has an MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad. Vaidyanathan, an IIM, Ahmedabad alumnus, started his career with P&G in 1995 as an intern and joined the sales team from campus in 1996. He has more than 26 years of experience across diverse geographies and cultures like India and ASEAN countries including Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2018, he was elevated to the role of CEO, P&G Indonesia.

J&K launched ‘Jan Nigrani’ app to help people lodge complaints

The rural development and panchayati raj department of Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday launched a mobile application to help people lodge complaints related to various schemes online, officials said. The Jan Nigrani app is a 24×7 internet-based platform aimed at reporting and resolving the grievances of the residents of J&K, against various government schemes launched by the department.

  • Jan Nigrani app is an internet-based solution for reporting and resolution of grievances against various Govt schemes from registered residents of UT of J & K.
  • It will make a single link between the residents and the officials to map concerned authorities related to the complaint about faster grievance redressal.

International Mother Earth Day observed on 22 April

On April 22, people unite to celebrate International Mother Earth Day. The day is to focus on the responsibility to rebuild our troubled relationship with nature. It recognizes that “the Earth and its ecosystems are our home” and that “it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.”

The day focuses on the global climate crisis that is worsening with each passing day. World Earth Day 2022 will mark the 52nd Anniversary of the day since it started being observed in 1970. Earth Day was renamed officially by the UN in 2009 as International Mother Earth Day.

The theme of Earth Day 2022 is to ‘Invest in our planet’.

National Metallurgist Award 2021 – On 20th April 2022, the National Metallurgist Award 2021 will be hosted by the Union Ministry for Steel. Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, the Union Minister of Steel will be chairing this program.

The aim of the program is to recognize the outstanding contribution of engineers/metallurgists who are working in the Iron & Steel sector covering R&D, Manufacturing, Education, Design, Energy Conservation, and Waste management, so as to achieve the objectives of Atmnirbhar Bharat. The awards boost the morale of an individual or an organization when their achievements get to be recognized. The award also promotes creativity and innovation, encourages competition, increases motivation, creates a positive workplace, and improves productivity.

Lt Gen. Manoj Kumar Katiyar named as next DG of Military Operations

Lt Gen. Manoj Kumar Katiyar

Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar has been appointed as the next Director-General of Military Operations. He would be taking over the new office on May 1. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lieutenant General Katiyar was commissioned in the 23rd Battalion of the Rajput Regiment in June 1986.

He is presently the General Officer Commanding of 1 Corps, a strike formation responsible for offensive operations against both Pakistan and China. He was posted as Director of General Staff Duties at Army Headquarters. He also commanded an infantry brigade along the Western borders and a mountain division. Besides attending the National Defence College, New Delhi, he is also a distinguished graduate of the National War College, USA. He served as an instructor in the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan and at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

Surat hosts the ‘Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization’ conference

The 3-day “Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization” conference had a grand opening in Surat today. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India with Surat Smart City Corporation Development Ltd., under the clarion call of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), given by Hon’ble Prime Minister to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Independence.

KEY POINTS:

  • Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs was the chief guest at the event. Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat addressed the gathering through a Video Message. Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Kaushal Kishore, Union Minister of State for Railways Ms Darshana Jardosh, Shri Vinod Moradiya, Minister of Urban development and urban housing, Government of Gujarat, Dr Audimulapu Suresh, Minister of Education, Andhra Pradesh, Shri C.R. Patil, MP, and Smt. Hemali Kalpeshkumar Boghawala, Mayor, Surat took part in the inaugural session. 
  • The event was attended by all key urban stakeholders from the Central and State Governments, including Secretary, MoHUA Shri Manoj Joshi, Principal Secretaries of States/UTs, Municipal Commissioners of Cities, MDs/CEOs of 100 Smart Cities, State Level Nodal Agencies/ Mission Directorates, professionals, industry representatives, media, and members of academia.
  • During the inaugural, award winners of the India Smart Cities Awards Contest (ISAC) 2020 were honoured with an awards distribution ceremony. In 2021, these prizes were first announced during a virtual conference.

However, because to the COVID-19 scenario at the time, the prize distribution ceremony was postponed. The Best City award went to Surat and Indore, and the Best State award went to Uttar Pradesh. Annexures I, II, and III contain a list of awards.
