India successfully test-fires ‘improved’ BrahMos supersonic cruise missile

India successfully test-fired a new version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile on January 20, 2022, with increased indigenous content and improved performance. The launch was conducted jointly by Brahmos Aerospace in close coordination with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) team.

Brahmos was successfully test-fired from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on January 20, 2022. The flight test is a major milestone in the way forward for BrahMos programme. The highly maneuverable missile cruised at supersonic speed for its maximum range and all mission objectives were met.

BrahMos Aerospace, the joint venture between DRDO and NPO Mashinostroyeniya, Russia, has been continuously upgrading the powerful, highly versatile BrahMos to increase its effectiveness and lethality against sea and land targets.

FDI flows to India falls by 26% in 2021: UNCTAD report

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows to India in 2021 were 26% lower, mainly because large M&A deals recorded in 2020 were not repeated, the UN trade body has said. The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Investment Trends Monitor published on January 19, 2022 said global foreign direct investment flows showed a strong rebound in 2021, growing 77 percent to an estimated USD 1.65 trillion, from USD 929 billion in 2020, surpassing their pre-COVID-19 level.

In 2020, FDI to India was recorded at USD 64 billion. This was 27 percent more compared to USD 51 billion FDI in 2019. UNCTAD said that low FDI in India was mainly because large cross-border mergers & acquisitions (M&A) deals recorded in 2020 were not repeated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (January 21, 2022) announced that a grand statue of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose will be installed at India Gate as a symbol of India’s indebtedness to him. The iconic statue will honour his contribution to the independence movement. 

He said, till the grand statue of Netaji Bose is completed, a hologram statue of his would be present at the same place.  Mr. Modi will unveil the hologram statue on 23rd January, Netaji’s birth anniversary.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate was merged with the eternal flame at the National War Memorial in the national capital on January 21, 2022. The ceremony was led by the Integrated Defence Staff chief, Air Marshal Balabadhra Radha Krishna.

This means that after 50 years of continuous lightning, the flame at Amar Jawan Jyoti will no longer be present there.

China’s BRICS Sherpa and Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu hosted the 2022 the First BRICS Sherpas’ Meeting to discuss programme and priorities for the year.

China took over the rotating chairmanship of BRICS on January 01, 2022, from India and will host a series of activities including the 14th BRICS Summit. India’s BRICS Sherpa of 2022 Sanjay Bhattacharyya represented Indian delegation. BRICS is a grouping of five major emerging economies — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Now, the countries focus on new areas like waste-water technologies, sustainable agriculture, aerospace engineering, robotics and artificial intelligence. The decision was taken during the 5th Joint Committee meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the 216-foot-tall statue of Sri Ramanujacharya at Chinna Jeeyar Swamy’s ashram at Muchintal near Shamshabad, on the occasion of his 1,000th birth anniversary on February 5.

Narendra Modi will dedicate the Statue of Equality to the world on February 5, 2022. It is a 216 feet tall statue of Sri Ramanujacharya, a 11th century Bhakti saint, and a revolutionary social reformer. It is located in a 45-acre complex at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad in Telangana.

The project is built at a cost ofRs. 1,000-crore, which was funded entirely by donations from devotees globally. President Ram Nath Kovind will unveil the inner chamber of the statue of Ramanujacharya on February 13, 2022. The Statue of Equality is the world’s second-tallest statue in a sitting position. The Buddha statue in Thailandi s considered as the world’s tallest statue in a sitting pose.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed former comptroller and auditor general (CAG) chief Vinod Rai as the independent chairman of the Unity Small Finance Bank (USFB), according to an official statement. Unity Small Finance Bank is a joint venture of the Centrum Group and fintech firm BharatPe, in the ratio 51:49 respectively.

Dileep Sanghani elected as IFFCO chairman

Dileep Sanghani has been elected as chairman (17th) of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO). He succeeds Balvinder Singh Nakai. Sanghani was elected as the vice-chairman of IFFCO in the year 2019.

IFFCO is a multi-state cooperative society engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing fertilisers.
