Jailed Russian Opposition leader Alexei Navalny wins EU’s Sakharov Prize

Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been awarded the European Union’s highest award for human rights-Sakharov Prize for Freedom of ThoughtIt European Union’s top human rights prize.

In awarding the Sakharov Prize to Mr. Navalny, the European Parliament praised his “immense personal bravery.”

The 45-year-old activist was poisoned with a nerve agent last year and promptly arrested upon his return to Moscow from treatment in Germany and later imprisoned.

Imtiaz Ali appointed as ambassador of Russian Film Festival in India

The renowned film director, producer, and writer, Imtiaz Ali was appointed as the ambassador of the Russian Film Festival in India.

The first-ever online Russian Film Festival in India is organized by ROSKINO, a Russian film promotion body, from October 16 to November 27, 2021.

As part of the festival, ten notable Russian films of various genres will be premiered for Indian audiences on Disney+ Hotstar.

The festival was launched in 2020 and has already been successfully held in 14 countries. 

Rupifi partners with Muthoot Finance to provide instant credit to SMEs

SME lender and fintech Rupifi has partnered with non-banking financial company Muthoot Finance aims to power 15 million small and medium-sized enterprises with access to instant credit in the next few years.

The companies started this partnership earlier this year and are now looking to scale this across different industry verticals in the country.

Launched in January 2020, Rupifi allows SMEs to flexibly repay their dues as and when required with a per-day interest pricing but without any monthly EMIs.

Drone developer FIXAR ties up with Paras Aerospace to enter the Indian market

On 19 October 2021; European commercial drone and software developer FIXAR announced its tie-up with Paras Aerospace, a subsidiary of Paras Defence. This partnership between the two has emerged for the initiation of the Drone (UAV) market in India.

As a first step towards this partnership, the company will launch its flagship fixed-wing drone FIXAR007 in the country.

The initial agreement targets delivery of 150 drones to the operators in India in the next 6-8 months. 

RBI imposes ₹1 crore penalty on Paytm Payments Bank

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of 1 crore on Paytm Payments Bank for violating provisions of Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007 and ₹27.78 lakh on Western Union Financial Services for non-compliance with certain directions.

The central bank noted that Paytm payments bank’s application seeking the issue of the final certificate of authorization did not reflect its factual position.

This is related to an offense committed of the nature referred to in Section 26 (2) of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.

Former US President Trump plans to launch his own social media platform

Former U.S. President Donald Trump will launch his own social media app, TRUTH Social, that he said would “stand up to Big Tech” companies such as Twitter and Facebook that have barred him from their platforms.

The long-awaited platform will be owned by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which also intends to launch a subscription video-on-demand service that will feature “non-woke” entertainment programming.

The Trump Media & Technology Group will merge with blank check company Digital Acquisition Corp to make TMTG a publicly-listed company.

Russian filmmaker Klim Shipenko becomes first to shoot a film in space

A Russian film crew is back on Earth after wrapping up scenes for the first movie shot in space.

Klim Shipenko and actor Yulia Peresild left the International Space Station and landed in Kazakhstan – to be met by a crew filming touchdown scenes.

The Russian film director Klim Shipenko and actress Yulia Peresild spent 12 days in the ISS for filming 30 minutes duration scenes for the film “The Challenge”. It took around 30 hours to record the material while in space. “The Challenge” is the first feature film to be shot in space. The film is based on the life of a woman doctor who goes to space to save a cosmonaut’s life.

OnePlus appoints Navnit Nakra as India CEO and Head of India region

Smartphone maker OnePlus has appointed Navnit Nakra as its India CEO and Head of the OnePlus India region. Nakra will lead the company’s business operations and overall strategy for the country, he will play a new senior leadership role in the company.

Prior to this, Nakra served as the Vice President, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Sales of OnePlus in India. He had joined the company in February 2020.

Veteran sports administrator Sahdev Yadav was unanimously elected as president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for a four-year term.

Other appointments include Secretary-general – Anand Gowde and Treasurer – Naresh Sharma.

A total of 10 vice presidents, four joint secretaries, and seven executive committee members were also elected.

Indonesia and China Lifts 2020 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup respectively

Indonesia lifted the Thomas Cup trophy for the first time since 2002 after sweeping past defending champions China 3-0 in the final on October 17, 2021.

Indonesia is the most successful nation in the history of the team championship of men’s badminton with 14 titles but had endured a nineteen-year winless drought before Sunday’s victory.

UBER Cup: Meanwhile in Uber Cup, China beat defending champions Japan 3-1, to clinch their 15th Uber Cup trophy. South Korea and Thailand shared bronze. Thomas Cup is the biennial international badminton championship contested by the men’s national teams of the member associations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) while the Uber Cup is a women’s team event.

The 2020 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 31st edition of the Thomas Cup and the 28th edition of the Uber Cup.

International Stuttering Awareness Day: 22 October

International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD), or International Stammering Awareness Day, is an annual celebration held on October 22.
