World Bank approves USD 125 million loan to West Bengal to support poor and and vulnerable groups

The World Bank’s Executive Board of Directors approved a $125 million loan to the Government of West Bengal to support the state’s efforts to help poor and vulnerable groups access social protection services. The loan has been provided under the ‘West Bengal Building State Capability for Inclusive Social Protection’ operation, on 19 January, 2022.

The financial assistance will help the state administration to improve services such as medical help through telemedicine, support for the elderly and differently-abled, financial inclusion of citizens with digital payments and disbursement of benefits for public schemes.

NATO partners to hold 12-day maritime drills in Mediterranean Sea

The United States and NATO partners will conduct a 12-day maritime exercise in the Mediterranean Sea, beginning January 24, 2022, US Department of Defense spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday. The name of the maritime exercise is “Neptune Strike ’22”.

The maritime exercise, called “Neptune Strike ’22” will run through February 4. The main purpose of this exercise will be to demonstrate and test NATO’s wide range of maritime capabilities.

The former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been conferred with the Netaji Award 2022 by the Netaji Research Bureau, based in Kolkata. The award was presented by the Bureau on January 23, 2022 to commemorate 125th birth anniversary celebration of the legendary freedom fighter, Subhas Chandra Bose at his Elgin Road residence in Kolkata.

Consul general of Japan in Kolkata, Nakamura Yutaka, received the honour on behalf of Abe at a function organised by the bureau at the Elgin Road residence here of the national icon.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Sunday announced that the Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management and professor Vinod Sharma have been selected for the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2022 for their work in Disaster Management.

The government of India has instituted an annual award known as Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar, to recognize and honour the invaluable contribution and selfless service rendered by individuals and organizations in India in the field of disaster management.

The award is announced every year on 23rd January, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. This year marks the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

PM Narendra Modi unveils hologram statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate on Parakram Divas

January 23 is being observed as Parakram Diwas in India, to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Netaji’s birth anniversary is being celebrated as Parakram Diwas in the nation.

The 3D image of Netaji is projected on it to create the effect of a hologram. The size of the hologram statue is 28 feet in height and 6 feet in width. As a part of this year-long celebration, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated a hologram statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate in New Delhi. The hologram statue will be replaced by a grand granite statue of Netaji, once the statue is completed.

The statue is being installed on 125th birth anniversary as a tribute to the immense contribution of Netaji in the country’s freedom struggle and would be a symbol of the country’s indebtedness to him.

The Union Minister of Home and Cooperation Shri Amit Shah has virtually released India’s First “District Good Governance Index” for 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu district has emerged at the top, followed by districts of Doda, Samba, Pulwama and Srinagar in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

This index has been prepared by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) in collaboration with the Government of Jammu & Kashmir. The District Good Governance Index (DGGI) is a framework document comprising of performance under ten governance sectors having 58 indicators with 116 data points.

Govt annouces 40-100 percent subsidy to popularise drone in agriculture; Maximum subsidy- Rs 10 lakh

Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has issued guidelines to make drone technology affordable to the stakeholders of this sector. The guidelines of “Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization” (SMAM) have been amended which envisages granting upto 100% of the cost of agriculture drone or Rs. 10 lakhs, whichever is less, as grant for purchase of drones bythe Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institutes, ICAR institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Agriculture Universities for taking up large scale demonstrations of this technology on the farmers’ fields.

The detail of percent and maximum amount of subsidy is given below:

Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institutes, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Agriculture Universities- 100% subsidy- Rs 10 lakh maximum

Agriculture graduates establishing Custom Hiring Centers (CHCs)= 50 per cent subsidy up to ₹5 lakh

Existing CHCs or new ones, already or to be set up by cooperative society of farmers, farmer producers organizations (FPOs) and rural entrepreneurs are entitled to receive= 40 per cent subsidy (maximum ₹4 lakh).

The Ministry of New and Renewable Ministry (MNRE) on Saturday said it will infuse ₹1,000 crore in state-run Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) as it eyes financing renewable energy (RE) capacity of 3,300 megawatt (MW).

As per present RBI norms, an agency can extend loans on 20 percent of its net worth. With infusion of Rs 1000 crore in SECI its network will increase and hence it can extend more loans. With this additional capital infusion, the government aims at financing renewable energy (RE) capacity of 3,300 megawatt (MW).

In 2015 Government had allowed the change of name from “Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI)” to “Renewable Energy Corporation of India (RECI)”.

NITI Aayog & RMI India releases report ‘Banking on Electric Vehicles in India’ for priority-sector recognition of Electric Vehicles

NITI Aayog, Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), and RMI India released a report, titled ‘Banking on Electric Vehicles in India’, which outlines the importance of priority-sector recognition for retail lending in the electric mobility ecosystem. The report provides considerations and recommendations to inform the inclusion of EVs in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) priority-sector lending (PSL) guidelines.

The report has been developed by NITI Aayog in collaboration with US-based non-profit organisation Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), and RMI India. The report has indicated electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and commercial four-wheelers as early segments to prioritise under Priority Sector Lending. Suggestion has also been made to recognise Electric Vehicles as an infrastructure sub-sector by the Finance Ministry and the incorporation of electric vehicles as a separate reporting category under RBI.

Indonesia has decided to change its capital from Jakarta to Nusantara, a site deep within the jungle of Kalimantan on Borneo Island, after a bill seeking the same was approved by the parliament.

The new capital named as Nusantara is located within the jungle of mineral-rich East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Jakarta will remain the commercial and financial centre while the government administrative functions will move to East Kalimantan.

The project for the development of new capital city Nusantara (meaning archipelago in Javanese) will be taken in five stages and the first stage is expected to begin in 2022. The estimated cost of the project is around 466 trillion rupiah ($32 billion).

The 2022 Syed Modi International badminton tournament was held at Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh from 18 to 23 January 2022. Men’s singles final was declared a ‘No Match’ between Arnaud Merkle and Lucas Claerbout, after one of the finalists tested positive for Covid-19.

India’s first para-badminton academy launched in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

With the aim to improve India’s medal prospects at the 2024 Paralympics, the country’s first state-of-the-art, high-performance para-badminton academy with advanced equipment and facilities has been set up in Lucknow.

Chief National Coach of the Indian Para-badminton team, Gaurav Khanna, formally announced the launch of the country’s first Para-Badminton Academy in Lucknow. The state-of-the-art, high-performance centre with advanced equipment and facilities in the Uttar Pradesh capital aims to improve India’s medal chances at the 2024 Paralympics. The set up will improve India’s medal prospects at the 2024 Paralympics to be held in Paris, France at Stade de France stadium.

The centre has been launched by Dronacharya awardee and head national coach of Indian para-badminton team, Gaurav Khanna, in association with Ageas Federal Life Insurance.

She is part of a carefully shortlisted group of 20 students from around the world. Jahnavi was one among only 20 young people from all over the world selected for IASP programme.
