Assam set up a tea Park at Kamrup district’s Chayygaon

Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said Assam is setting up a tea Park at Chayygaon in Kamrup District. This tea garden will have rail and port connectivity, cargo and warehouse amenities, processing facilities like tea grinding, blending, packaging, and other utility services under one roof.

Tea garden companies using garden lands for plantation of Segun and agar or selling off the tea estates, the Minister stated that tea garden owners cannot sell off their estates as the leased land still belongs to Assam Government and instead asked them to focus on innovation and branding of Assam Tea.

On September 1, sisters Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama turned 107 years and 300 days old, officially breaking the record for the world’s oldest living identical twins. Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama were born the third and fourth of 11 siblings on Shodoshima island in western Japan on Nov. 5, 1913. The Japanese siblings are also the oldest identical twins to have ever lived.

Popular films from the Himalayan states, besides Indian panorama selected films, will be showcased during the festival.

The union territory of Ladakh is hosting the first edition of The Himalayan Film Festival 2021 (THFF) from September 24 to 28 in Leh capital city, officials said. The film festival is being organised by the Administration of Union Territory of Ladakh in collaboration with the Directorate of Film Festivals, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

The film festival is being hosted in collaboration with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh. The five-day film festival is a part of the celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence.

The film festival will have active participation from the local filmmakers and showcase talent from across the 12 Himalayan states and UTs. Popular films from the Himalayan states viz Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh besides Indian Panorama selected films will be showcased during the festival.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry beaches get coveted ‘blue flag’ certification

Two Indian beaches in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were accorded the ‘Blue Flag’ certification by the coveted international eco-label ‘Blue Flag’, as per a release by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change released on 21 September (Tuesday). The two beaches to receive the certification this year are Kovalam in Tamil Nadu and Eden in Puducherry.

The Foundation for Environment Education (FEE), Denmark, which accords the Blue Flag certification, has also given re-certification for eight nominated beaches –, Ghoghla-Diu, Kasarkod, and Padubidri-Karnataka, Shivrajpur-Gujarat, Kappad-Kerala, Rushikonda- Andhra Pradesh, Golden-Odisha and Radhanagar- Andaman and Nicobar, which were awarded the Blue Flag certificate last year. These eight beaches got the Blue Flag certification on October 6, 2020.

The International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September. This Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. The 2021 theme, declared by the World Federation of the Deaf, is “We Sign For Human Rights,” highlighting how each of us – deaf and hearing people around the world – can work together hand in hand to promote the recognition of our right to use sign languages in all areas of life.

The International Day of Sign Languages was first celebrated in 2018 as part of the International Week of the Deaf.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal on September 20, flagged off dwarf container train from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT). With this, the first consignment of laden dwarf containers from the port was moved by train to ICD Kanpur. This is the first consignment of laden dwarf containers from Mumbai-based JNPT port, the biggest container port in India. The consignment was moved by train to Inland Container Depot (ICD) Kanpur. The main benefit of dwarf containers is that they are shorter in size due to which they can be double-stacked, as well as easily run on electrified tracks. This will enable the railways to undertake double-stack movement of cargo, leading to a reduction in logistics costs.

OECD projects India’s economic growth forecast at 9.7% for FY22 & 7.9% for FY23

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Tuesday cut its projection of India’s economic growth by 0.2 percentage points to 9.7 percent for the current financial year (2021-22).

The economy was projected by the grouping of advanced nations to grow by 7.9 percent next financial year, 0.3 percentage points slower than pegged by it earlier. For the global economy, OECD has projected a strong growth rate of 5.7% in 2021 and 4.5% in 2022, as compared to 5.8% and 4.4%, respectively, estimated earlier.

Asian Development Bank cuts India’s GDP forecast for FY22 to 10%

The Asian Development Bank Wednesday cut India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast to 10% for FY21, from 11% projected in April, on account of disruptions due to the second wave. The Manila-based multilateral funding agency ADB has predicted the GDP growth for fiscal 2022-23 (FY23) to 7.5 percent.

YES Bank entered into a partnership with Visa to issue credit cards to its customers on the payment platform, said the leading private sector bank in a recent statement. With the partnership, Yes Bank will begin the issuance of nine credit card variants – both consumer and commercial, on Visa’s payment network.

The Visa co-branded cards comes with nine credit card variants covering all segments, consumer cards, business cards, and corporate cards across YES First, YES Premia, and YES Prosperity. Yes Bank has achieved the transition to Visa as a payment network within a record time of less than 60 days, post the bank imposed on MasterCard from July 22, 2021.

The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday appointed Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi as Sustainable Development Goals Advocate. It is an integral role for advancing the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.

It is UN International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour. At present, the world is seeing the first rise in child labour in two decades. Sathyarthi’s appointment is seen as a significant step towards improving the situation.

The four newly appointed advocates are Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, STEM activist Valentina Muñoz Rabanal, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and K-pop superstars BLACKPINK (South Korean girl group). With this, the UN now has a total of 16 SDG Advocates. The SDG Advocates are prominent leaders in the world who work to mobilize action to deliver the 17 SDGs by 2030, using their considerable spheres of influence. The 76th UN General Assembly will be taking place from September 21 to 30, 2021.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics unveiled its official motto, “Together for a Shared Future”, during a ceremony at the city’s Capital Museum.

Chen Ning, director-general of Beijing 2022’s Culture and Ceremonies Department, said that the slogan was a commitment towards overcoming global challenges as a community with a shared future for mankind. The slogan reflects the power of the Games to overcome global challenges as a community, with a shared future for humankind, and work together towards a better tomorrow, especially given the difficulties faced throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Games will be held from February 4-20, with Beijing set to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Zee Entertainment & Sony Pictures signs merger deal

The Board of Directors of ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has unanimously approved the merger of the company with Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI). As a part of the merger, shareholders of SPNI will also infuse growth capital into SPNI, which will make them the majority stakeholder in the merged entity. The merged entity will be listed on the Indian stock exchanges.SPNI will also inject growth capital into SPNI as part of the merger, giving it a total value of US$ 1.575 billion at closure, which it can utilise to pursue further development opportunities.

About the deal:

  • Zee Entertainment will hold 47.07 percent, while Sony India will hold a 52.93 percent stake in the merged company. Both the companies have agreed to a binding exclusivity for 90 days.
  • Following the merger, Sony India will have the right to appoint the majority of directors to the merged company.
  • Puneet Goenka, the CEO of Zee Entertainment, will be the MD and CEO of the merged entity for a period of 5 years.

“National Single Window System” Launched by Union Minister Piyush Goyal

The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal has launched the ‘National Single Window System (NSWS)’ that will help domestic and global investors in getting regulatory approvals through the online portal, which currently hosts 18 central departments and nine states. NSWS is a single-window portal that will act as a one-stop-shop for investors or entrepreneurs, to get approvals and clearances needed from Government. It shall give freedom from the legacy of running to government offices for approvals and registrations needed by investors, entrepreneurs, and businesses in India.

The minister said investors will get access to all solutions at one click of the mouse through end-to-end facilitation. “This would bring transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in the ecosystem and all information will be available on a single dashboard,” he said.
