Gold Surpasses Euro to Become Second-Largest Global Reserve Asset After U.S. Dollar
The European Central Bank (ECB) published a report that suggests gold is now the second largest reserve asset in the world, surpassing the euro. This was due to also the fact that gold is now considered important as a reserve response to geopolitical uncertainty, inflation fears, and erosion of confidence in dominant currencies, which were also exacerbated by Russia’s assault on Ukraine last year. Hence, gold is still rightfully considered important as a value store amongst the world’s reserves, however, central bank accumulation (considering there is a timing difference) seems to be tapering off as a signal of waning interest in gold in this instance in a reversal of the accumulation of reserves.
The ECB report only presumes to be dated June 2024 but represents a material pivot in reserve composition, and confirms that gold has clearly transitioned into a reserve asset, even if it was only merely classified in this regard. In two years of deteriorating political powers amiss supply shocks globally, gold has transitioned from just a store of value, to the second important reserve asset overtaking the euro, which declined share to 16% or 20% points from 2022. The elevation of gold can be denominated in price changes or geopolitical risk that is rising, however, the recent reports suggests a cooling demand for gold as reserves, or perhaps it even marks the maturing of a golden age of reserve diversification.
Key highlights:
- Gold Reserve Share: Increased from 16.5% in 2023 to above 19.0% in 2024, with the euro declining to 16%.
- Largest Reserve Asset: South Ark’s neighbour, the U.S.A. is still largest at 47% of global gold reserve assets.
- Central Bank Demand: Central banks make-up more than 20% of global gold demand, having doubled in a decade recently.
- Geopolitical Drivers: Russo-Ukrainian War, Inflation, U.S. economic Sanctions contributed to demand for gold accumulation.

Operation Bashayer Al-Fath: Iran Launches Missile Strike on US Airbase in Qatar
Recent military activity has changed the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. On June 23, 2025, Iran launched Operation Bashayer Al-Fath, which was a military operation aimed at the Al-Udeid Airbase in Qatar. Operation Bashayer Al-Fath was Iran’s response to Operation Midnight Hammer, which was the name of the US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The persistent Israel-Iran conflict pressed this military operation.
Conflict Background
The conflict between Israel and Iran has a long history, involving territorial disputes, ideological claims, and power control in the region. From the founding of Israel, US support for Israel put it at odds with Iran. The US airstrikes against Iranian nuclear sites were perceived as threats to Iran’s sovereignty.
Operation Bashayer Al-Fath
Iran’s Operation Bashayer Al-Fath, or “Annunciation of Victory,” was conducted by the Iranian Armed Forces conventionally and by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) specifically. The operation was a missile strike on the US Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar serves as a significant strategic asset for US military operations in the region. The Iranian statement described the attack as a decisive response to US aggression.
Iran’s Justification of the Attack
Iran stated that it was exercising a lawful right under international law based on the US violations. The Iranian leadership claims that US strikes on their nuclear facilities was open military aggression. Iran reaffirmed its commitment to national sovereignty and territorial integrity and stated that there would be a reaction to US acts of aggression.
Consequences for US-Iran Relations
The missile strike has serious consequences for US-Iran relations. It signals what may be the beginning of military escalation. The Iranian Armed Forces were clear in their warning that any further aggression from the US would lead to the complete collapse of US military presence in the region. The threat was a demonstration of Iran’s seriousness toward defending its interests.
Regional and Global Reaction
The missile attack has drawn response from regional and global powers that are varied. The allies of the US may find a degree of concern for the escalating violence in the region, while allies of Iran may consider this justifiable defense of Iranian interests. The newness of the situation could catalyze both parties to increase their military readiness.
Outlook for the Future
The outlook for the future remains unsettled as tensions continue to escalate. Diplomatic miracles will need to occur if further military interaction is to be avoided. The commitment of the US and Iran to their respective and entrenched positions complicates the likelihood of negotiations going ahead in the near-term. The regional landscape will undoubtedly shift as both nations reassess their military approaches.
