Palm leaf Manuscript Museum: The Palm Leaf Manuscript Museum, equipped with contemporary audio-visual technology, has been opened in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, by Kerala Chief Minister (CM) Pinarayi Vijayan. The Museum, promoted as “World’s First Palm-Leaf Manuscript Museum” was set up by the Archives Department in association with the Kerala Museum of History and Heritage at a cost of Rs 3 crore.

The museum is a collection of intriguing tidbits about the political, societal, and economic aspects of the 650-year-long Travancore kingdom that ended in the 19th century. It had been the Central Vernacular Records Office since 1887 before becoming a museum.

Key Highlights of the museum:

The museum is a useful resource for historical and cultural studies for both academic and non-academic researchers. There are eight theme-based galleries at the museum, each one showcasing a different aspect of society, including “History of Writing,” “Land and People,” “Administration,” “War and Peace,” “Education and Health,” “Economy,” “Art and Culture,” and “Mathilakam Records.”

The museum stores 187 manuscripts at Central Archives and the department’s regional officers in Ernakulam and Kozhikode. The manuscripts span 6 centuries From 1249 CE to 1896. It will be housed in the 6,000-sq ft museum which was arranged by the Kerala government’s nodal agency for museums Keralam–Museum of History and Heritage. Ancient scripts including Vattezhuthu, Kolezhuthu, Malayanma, and ancient Tamil and Malayalam manuscripts are kept in the museum. The 1st phase’s archival material was selected after sorting through a stock of carelessly stored 1.5 crore palm-leaf records from all across Kerala.

Ghaziabad-Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay section: The Ghaziabad-Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay segment (762 KM) now holds the record for the Indian Railways’ longest fully automatic block signalling section. In order to increase line capacity to run more trains on existing High Density Routes of Indian Railways, Automatic Block Signalling (ABS) is a cost effective solution. Indian Railways has been rolling out Automatic Block signalling on a mission mode. ABS has been commissioned on 268 Rkm during 2022-23. As of December 31, 2022, ABS was available on 3706 km of route across IR. With implementation of Automatic Signalling, increase in capacity will accrue resulting in more train services becoming possible.

The G20 logo for the meeting was released by Lieutenant Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan at a function held at Beach Road Gandhi Tidal. Dr. Tamisai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving all the states the opportunity to host the G-20 meetings. Cabinet Nod for Rs 2500 Cr Scheme to Raise Infra of DD, AIRs: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved a project worth more than Rs 2,500 crore for Doordarshan and All India Radio in an effort to modernise Prasar Bharati’s broadcast network and infrastructure. Under the scheme, eight lakh DD Free Dish DTH set top boxes (STBs) will also be distributed to people living in remote, tribal, LWE, border areas and ‘aspirational’ districts.

About The Scheme:

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced the Central Sector ‘Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND)’ scheme with an outlay of Rs 2,539.61 crore up to 2025-26, which was approved by the CCEA.

Significance of This Scheme:

  • The BIND scheme is the vehicle for providing financial support to Prasar Bharati for expenses related to expansion and upgradation of its broadcasting infrastructure, content development and civil work related to the organization.
  • The BIND scheme will give the public broadcaster the opportunity to upgrade its infrastructure significantly, extending its reach to include border and critical areas and LWE (Left Wing Extremism) hotspots while supplying viewers with high-quality content.
  • Another priority area of the scheme is the development of high-quality content for both domestic and international audiences and ensuring availability of diverse content to the viewers by upgradation of capacity of the DTH platform to accommodate more channels, the ministry said.  Purchase of OB vans and digital upgradation of DD and AIR studios to make them HD ready will also be done as part of the project.
  • In addition to enhancing the scope of public broadcasting, the project for modernization and augmentation of broadcast infrastructure also has the potential to generate indirect employment by way of manufacturing and services related to supply and installation of broadcast equipment.
  • According to the statement, content generation and innovation for AIR and DD has the potential of indirect employment of persons with varied experience of different media fields in the content production sector, including TV/Radio production, transmission and associated media related services.
  • The project for expansion of the reach of DD Free Dish is also expected to generate employment opportunities in the manufacturing of STBs.
