IISc-ISRO develop device to conduct microbial experiments in outer space
Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have developed a modular, self-contained device to cultivate microorganisms which could enable scientists to carry out biological experiments even in space.
In a study published in Acta Astronautica, the team showed how the device can be used to activate and track the growth of a bacterium called Sporosarcina pasteurii over several days, with minimal human involvement. Significance of the study
This understanding of how these microbes behave in extreme environments will provide valuable insights for human space missions like ‘Gaganyaan’ that is set to be launched in 2022.
Background
Scientists have been exploring the use of lab-on-chip platforms, in recent years, which combine several inputs into a single integrated chip to conduct experiments. However, there are other challenges to design such platforms for outer space as compared to the lab.
About the new device
The new device uses a combination of Light Emitting Diode (LED) and photodiode sensor, which track the bacterial growth by measuring optical density or scattering of light. It is similar to spectrophotometers used in the lab. It also comprises of separate compartments for different experiments. Each compartment or ‘cassette’ have chamber where bacteria and nutrient medium can be mixed to kickstart growth.
Govt launches AYUSH AAPKE DWAR campaign
Ayush Ministry has launched the campaign AYUSH AAPKE DWAR from more than 45 locations across the country. The campaign aims to distribute medicinal plant saplings to 75 lakh households in one year. The medicinal plants include Tejpatta, Stevia, Ashoka, Giloy, Ashwagandha, Lemongrass, Tulsi, Sarpagandha and Amla.
Minister of State for Ayush Dr Mahendra Munjapara launched the campaign from Ayush Bhawan in New Delhi by distributing medicinal plants to staff. On this occasion, Dr. Munjapara appealed to adopt medicinal plants and take care of these as a part of their family.
Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav
Under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, various other programs were launched such as- launch of the Y-Break App and distribution of Prophylactic Ayush Drugs.
AYUSH ministry
AYUSH Ministry is dubbed as “Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy”. It was set up on November 9, 2014 to develop education, research and propagation of indigenous alternative medicine systems across India. This ministry was renamed as “Ministry of AYUSH” on April 13, 2021. This ministry includes seven traditional systems of healthcare.
Function of the ministry
AYUSH ministry runs various healthcare programs, with primary focus on rural population. It forms an integral backbone of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Till date, about 50000 children have been enrolled in ‘Homeopathy for Healthy Child’.
The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) and Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Science (CCRA), Ministry of Ayush distributed medicinal saplings and Ayurvedic medicines to the public.
Mr. Sonowal also visited Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) and reviewed various projects undertaken by it. The state-of-the-art structure is being built by Mumbai Port Trust with 50% funding under Sagarmala and it is expected to be completed by December 2021.
Mr. Sonowal also witnessed a special programme organised by Mumbai Port Trust as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mohotsav celebrations.
Arunachal Pradesh launches Two Agri schemes
Arunachal Pradesh government has launched two ambitious schemes, one in agriculture sector called ‘AtmaNirbhar Krishi Yojna’ and the other for horticulture named ‘AtmaNirbhar Bagwani Yojna’. The schemes are part of the AtmaNirbhar program announced during the Budget session held in February this year.
A total amount of 120 crores rupees – 60 crore rupees for each scheme – has been allocated to the two concerned departments of Agriculture and Horticulture.
After launching the schemes in Itanagar, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said that the schemes will immensely benefit farmers and Self Help Groups (SHGs) across the state, and appealed all to get in touch with their respective district administrations to get the details and avail the schemes.
Atmanirbhar Krishi Yojana
This scheme is the subsumed version of erstwhile Chief Minister’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana and Chief Minister’s Samuh Yojana. This subsumed scheme gives more thrust and comprises more provision of bank loan. Similarly, the Atmanirbhar Bagwani Yojana is the updated version of Chief Minister’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana.
Significance of the schemes
Both of the schemes are unique because both based on front-ended subsidies. Under the scheme, credit link will be provided to the beneficiaries by the State Bank of India, Arunachal Pradesh Rural Bank (APRB) and Arunachal Pradesh Cooperative Apex Bank. Under the scheme, 45 percent will be provided as government subsidy, 45 percent as bank loan while only 10 percent will have to be borne by the farmer.
President Ram Nath Kovind confers National Teachers’ Award on 44 teachers
President Ram Nath Kovind today awarded 44 unique teachers from all over India with the National Teachers’ Award 2021 today, on the occasion of Teacher’s Day, for their exemplary work in education.
A good teacher is a personality-builder, a society-builder, and a nation-builder, said President Ram Nath Kovind while presenting the National Teachers’ Awards 2021 to 44 teachers on Sunday.
This year, two teachers from Delhi’s Bal Bharati Public School, Dwarka and Rajasthan’s Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Jhunjhunu received the awards from amongst those working in CBSE schools. There were two awardees each from UP, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Odisha, Bihar, Gujarat and Rajasthan. A teacher from Karpawand, Bastar is also among awardees.
Anonymous Myanmar photographer wins Visa d’Or for News photojournalism award at the “Visa Pour L’Image” festival in Perpignan, France
A Myanmar’s photographer, who has not been named for security reasons, won the Visa d’Or News award at the international photojournalism festival in Perpignan in southern France for his coverage of the Spring Revolution in his homeland.
The photographer, who remained unnamed for security reasons, scooped the Visa d’Or for News, the most prestigious award handed out at the Visa Pour L’Image festival in Perpignan, southwestern France.

Tokyo Paralympics 2020: India finishes 24th with record 19 medals
Indian contingent finished their campaign at the Tokyo Paralympic Games 2020 at an all-time high by securing a total of 19 medals which includes 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
Indian Flag Bearers:
- Javelin thrower Tek Chand was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics.
- Shooter Avani Lekhara was India’s flag-bearer at the closing ceremony.

- India sent its biggest ever contingent of 54 para-athletes at Tokyo Paralympics to compete across as many as 9 sporting disciplines at the Games.
- Prior to this, India had won a total of 12 Paralympics medals, since making its first appearance at the Paralympics in 1968, till the 2016 Rio.

Suhas Yathiraj: 1st IAS officer to win Paralympics medal
Tokyo Paralympics: 38-year-old Suhas Yathiraj, a district magistrate in Noida, came up with a valiant fight against world champion Lucas Mazur and took the gold medal match of men’s singles SL4 category to three games. He became the first IAS officer to win a medal at the Paralympics.
Suhas Yathiraj has scripted history by becoming the first Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer to win a medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. The 38-year-old made the feat special by winning a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Para Games on Sunday, losing only to top seed and world champion Lucas Mazur of France 21-15, 21-15-21 in the men’s singles SL4 category.
Meanwhile, India’s Tarun, who had tested Mazur in the semi-final, lost his bronze medal match to Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan in straight games.
Suhas Yathiraj, a Karnataka-born engineer who is currently serving as the District Magistrate of Noida in Uttar Pradesh, stunned the 3-time world championship medalist in straight games. Suhas looked in complete control against the much-fancied opponent, pushing the French bara-badminton star to the limits.

International Day of Charity: 05 September
The International Day of Charity is observed annually on 05 September. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, who had always been engaged in charitable work. Tamil Nadu to set up India’s first Dugong Conservation Reserve
The State government in Assembly on Friday declared 500 sq.km of the biodiversity-rich waters in the Palk Bay, on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, as India’s first dugong conservation reserve. The reserve will span the northern part of the Palk Bay from Adiramapattinam to Amapattinam.
- Dugong or sea cow is an endangered marine mammal. It is facing extinction because of habitat loss, sea pollution, and loss of seagrass.
- Dugong is found in Gulf of Mannar and at Palk Bay in Tamil Nadu.
- Gulf of Mannar is a shallow bay area between south eastern end of Tamil Nadu and western Sri Lanka.
- With the help of community participation, Government will also construct a Dugong Marine Conservation Reserve in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay area to protect the species.
- Marine Conservation Reserve will be established over an area of 500km in Palk Bay.
- It is believed that, an estimated 200 individuals live in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar area which would largely benefit from Tamil Nadu government’s recent decision to establish conservation reserve.
About Dugong
Dugong is a sea mammal and is the only living species of the order Sirenia. The mammal is restricted to coastal habitat because of seagrass, which is a major part of its diet. They have a distinct dolphin-like tail, different skull form and teeth pattern. Its closest relative is Steller’s Sea cow, which got extinction in eighteenth century. The IUCN has listed dugong as a “vulnerable to extinction species”. On the other hand, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species has limited or banned the trade of derived products.
Gujarat launches Vatan Prem Yojana
Gujaratis settled outside India and looking to donate for development works in their native villages will now get 40 per cent financial support from the Gujarat government.
Under the newly launched ‘Vatan Prem Yojana’, the Gujarat government encourages donations from non-resident Indians (NRIs) with Gujarati origins to fund development projects such as school classroom renovations, public infrastructure works such as surveillance systems, drainage, water recycling, sports complex among others.
Project Management Unit
Governing body has formed a project management unit for the smooth implementation of this scheme.
Donors under the project
Governing body has made it possible for donors to send their money online. Under the scheme, Non-Resident Gujaratis (NRGs) and NRIs can contribute 60 percent of the cost of a village-level project. Remaining 40 percent amount will be borne by the state government.
Vatan Prem Yojana
Vatan prem Yohana is a repackaged version of Madar-e-Vatan scheme by the state government of Gujarat. Madar-e-Vatan has been renamed due to association of the title with Persian language. In the earlier version of the scheme, contribution of the state government and NRIs was 50:50. Now, it has been changed to 60:10.

The Vatan prem yojana will cover village-level projects such as:
- Smart classes in schools and Library
- Community hall, Primary health centre and Anganwadi
- CCTV surveillance system,
- Water recycling, drainage, sewage treatment and beautification of ponds.

LIC acquires 3.9% stake in Bank of India via open market acquisition
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has received 3.9 per cent (15,90,07,791 shares) of the Bank of India through open market acquisition on 2 september 2021.Before this acquisition, LIC held about 3.17 percent stake in the Bank of India. After this acquisition, LIC now has 7.05 percent, equivalent to 28,92,87,324 shares of Bank of India.
This information was shared by the Bank of India to SEBI. As per SEBI guidelines, companies have to inform the stock exchanges when an entity holds more than 5 percent shares in a listed company.
