Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launches Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI) 4.0

Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya launched the Intensified Mission Indradhanush 4.0 in New Delhi to protect children and pregnant women from severe diseases. It is a special drive to ensure full immunization coverage in the country. The IMI 4.0 will be conducted in 416 districts across 33 states/UTs.

AIR correspondent reports that the goal of Mission Indradhanush is to ensure full immunization for children and pregnant women. Mission Indradhanush was launched in December 2014 as a special drive to expand immunization coverage in the country.

The programme will be implemented in three rounds, of 7 days each. The first round will begin from 7th February 2022, second round from 7th March 2022, and the third round from 4th April 2022. In the first round 11 states will be covered. These are Assam, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura and Chhattisgarh. Till date, ten phases of Mission Indradhanush have been completed covering 701 districts across the country.

West Bengal Government launches Open-air Classroom ‘Paray Shikshalaya’

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic disrupting education for school-going children, West Bengal government is set to launch an open-air classroom programme Paray Shikshalaya (Neighbourhood Schools) for primary and pre-primary students on February 7.

Under this program, the students would be studying in an open area. The initiative has been started by the Bengal government keeping in mind the ongoing COVID pandemic situation, which has forced the students to stay back home and attend online classes. However, it was found that students remain absent from their classes and do not take their studies seriously in online classes. 

The state government has decided to provide mid-day meals to the students of ‘Paray Shikshalaya’. “The make this project successful, the South 24 Parganas District’s Information and Culture department is working vigorously”. With this program, children will get accustomed to the physical classes. The government has selected clubs and parks to hold classes for standards 1 to 7.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance on Monday said it is offering cyber insurance to customers of Airtel Payments Bank as rising digital payments and transactions pose threat of cyber fraud.

This Cyber Insurance policy provides financial protection to customers against potential financial fraud relating to banking, credit or debit card; identity theft; phishing or email spoofing etc. The policy will provide a 90-day discovery period followed by a seven-day reporting period.

India has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine that uses circular strands of DNA to prime the immune system against the virus SARS-CoV-2. Researchers have welcomed news of the first DNA vaccine for people to receive approval anywhere in the world, and say many other DNA vaccines might soon be hot on its heels.

The ZyCoV-D which is the World’s first plasmid DNA vaccine has been produced by Ahmedabad-based vaccine manufacturer Zydus Cadila and it was administered for the first time in Patna On February 05, 2022. It is a Painless and Needleless vaccine given at intervals of 28 days and 56 days. It is the second India-made vaccine to get emergency authorization in India after Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

Centre appoints Dinesh Prasad Saklani as new Director of NCERT

Centre appoints Dinesh Prasad Saklani as new Director of NCERT: Dinesh Prasad Saklani has been appointed as the director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for five years. He will replace Hrushikesh Senapaty, who finished his term over a year ago.

He is currently a professor of history at the HNB Garhwal University, in Uttarakhand. Sridhar Srivastava has been holding the position on interim charge since then. Saklani is serving as a professor in the department of ancient Indian history, culture and archaeology.

Apart from this, he has penned down three books such as the ancient communities of the central Himalaya region and one titled ‘Ramayana Tradition in Historical Perspective’. Saklani has released various papers on Ramayana tradition in performing arts and in the Garhwal region.

Axis Mutual Fund has launched Axis Crisil SDL 2027 Debt Index Fund, a target maturity scheme with benchmark maturity of 31 May 2027.

The new fund offers (NFO) opened for subscription on 7 February and will close on 21 February. The new scheme will track the Crisil IBX SDL Index – May 2027 and the portfolio is designed to invest predominantly in a portfolio of state development loans (SDLs) maturing between 1 December 2026 and 31 May 2027. The index will be managed by Crisil Indices Ltd.

Santishree Pandit appointed first woman VC of JNU

Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit has been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), with the Ministry of Education (MoE) appointing her to the top post on Monday. Pandit is currently a political science professor at Department of Politics and Public Administration, Savitribai Phule Pune University. The 59-year-old Pandit is also an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil as well as PhD in International Relations. Ms. Pandit will be the first woman Vice Chancellor of JNU. Her appointment is for a period of five years.

M. Jagadesh Kumar, who was holding the charge of acting VC at JNU after his five year term ended last year, was last week appointed as the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Sri Lanka fast bowler Suranga Lakmal has announced to retire from international cricket after their upcoming tour of India, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement. SLC said that Lakmal has informed the board of his decision.

The 34-year-old right-arm fast bowler and right-handed batsman aim to join the English county club Derbyshire after retirement. The Derbyshire County Cricket Club has signed up Lakmal on a two-year contract. Lakmal made his debut in an ODI against India in December 2009. He has taken 168 wickets in 68 Test matches and 109 in 86 ODIs. The 34-year-old played only 11 T20Is, taking eight wickets. Lakmal has represented Sri Lanka in 165 international matches across formats, in his international career spanning over 12 years.

Christos Sartzetakis, the former President of Greece, has passed away due to respiratory failure in Athens, Greece. He was 93.

He served as a Greek jurist and a judge of the Supreme Court, who resisted against the militants during the 1967-1974 Rule of the Colonels. Sartzetakis, who was a jurist by profession, served as the President of Greece from 1985 to 1990

Cyclone Batsirai hits Madagascar

Cyclone Batsirai has killed at least 10 people in southeastern Madagascar. It is 2nd major storm in two weeks – made landfall on the east coast, with gusts of 235km/h (146mph) and high waves hitting coastal areas.

Madagascar was already reeling from Tropical Storm Ana, which killed 55 people when it hit the Indian Ocean island nation last month. Cyclone Batsirai has compounded the destruction, making landfall near the south-eastern city of Mananjary.
