Magnus Carlsen, (the world’s number one chess player) has won the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz 2025 tournament which was held in Zagreb, Croatia. Carlsen was crowned champion on July 7, 2025, with one round to spare. The tournament is part of the Grand Chess Tour and featured top chess players from around the world. Carlsen’s title demonstrates his quality of play and D Gukesh of India demonstrated his brilliance and skill in finishing third.

Carlsen was an unstoppable force

The SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz was a demanding event with chess players playing both of the classical time controls of Rapid and Blitz. Magnus Carlsen played strong chess throughout the event and won the tournament when he drew with India’s R Praggnanandhaa in the second last round. He then won in the last round vs Croatia Ivan Saric to win the tournament with total score of 22.5 out of 36. Wesley So from the USA, one of the best players ever in the USA finished 2nd with 20 points. So played exceptionally well on the last day and scored more than Carlsen in the final 9 games of Blitz, but it was not enough to catch him.

Gukesh Performance

India’s D Gukesh, the World Champion, surprised everyone, since this is not one of his stronger formats, in the Rapid format. He struggled a little with Blitz but bounced back in the second half to end up with 4 wins out of 9 games and earned a total of 19.5 points.

When Gukesh played his second round Blitz match against Carlsen, he used the Berlin defense, and ended up drawing.  This should show you how quickly he is improving in faster formats of chess, especially since he is only 19 years old.

The next Grand Chess Tour event will be in Saint Louis at the Saint Louis Chess Club, Missouri, USA, from August 10-16, 2025. This is the fourth event of the season and again, an opportunity for the world’s best players to accumulate points and prepare for the larger competitions. We are expecting more fantastic games from these players!

This award is special to Mr. Vedachalam because he has recently entered the 51-year benchmark of his career as an archaeologist and Tamil epigraphist. He received the Tamil Wikki Suran Award in Madurai, Tamil Nadu recently for his continuous and passionate work in history and archaeology. At 75 years of age, Mr. Vedachalam will continue to motivate many more through his dedication.

A Life Dedicated to Exploring History

Mr. Vedachalam started his career in Tamil history and archaeology after finishing an MA in Tamil Literature and receiving a PG diploma in archaeology and epigraphy. His first big project at the capital of the ancient Chera Kingdom, Karur, led to discovering part of the old fort wall. This inspired his passion for exploring the past.

His knowledge of Tamil literature made him a very effective epigraphist because he can read and interpret old name inscriptions and paintings on rocks and walls. For example, while exploring Vikramangalam one day, he lay on a ledge and saw a 2,000-year-old inscription on the ceiling that had been hidden for 2,000 years, that moment filled him with true pleasure, he told me.

Keeladi and Continual Passion

Mr Vedachalam is one of the first people who lectured about the significance of the Keeladi excavation site, which became famous when links with the Sangam Age were discovered. Even after regional retirement, he has consistently visited the site, sometimes remaining there from dawn to dusk to support the research. His passion for exposing and exploring the truth freed from the earth is still constant.

Teaching and Creating Awareness

He has Written 25 books. He has travelled to historic sites in India and abroad to study and compare what he found. Since 2009, he and his team, with Dhan Foundation help, have visited around 300 villages, every second Sunday educating villagers about the history of their land and what they should do to preserve their own culture and monuments. Whenever Mr. Vedachalam needs a break from researching historic monuments, he visites the colleges to share what he has learned with young students.

For him, history is not about caste or religion but about understanding a shared past that connects us all. He believes preserving ancient monuments and writings is vital for the next generation.

On July 6, the United Nations celebrated the first World Rural Development Day, which is designed to bring attention to the importance of improving the quality of life in rural areas. The Day identifies global challenges such as poverty, hunger, substandard infrastructure and absence of digital connectivity that can be commonly found in rural communities, and calls on every one of us to ensure that no one is left behind, especially in the most remote, ignored, and forgotten places on earth.

What it Means and Why it is Important

The UN General Assembly designated July 6 as World Rural Development Day to show the UN’s commitment the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on the challenges experienced by all living in rural areas, including women, youth, and Indigenous communities. Those who suffer most from poverty, hunger, and lack of services, coincide as the social groups that are important in farming, food security, and protecting the ecosystem.

The Day acts to encourage national and global actors that will be hosted by the United Nations. The Declaration calls on all governements, civil society and global institutions, to use this celebration and observance in any forms, whether through developing projects that address local challenges, raising awareness and galvanizing support, manipualting policies for recognition and inclusion of rural development in its services.

UN’s Vision and Actions

The UN vision for development encompasses an integrated approach to enhance the economy, society, and environment. It also promotes empowering women and youth, supporting access to digital technologies, and establishing improved roads, schools, and health services. The JEEViKA project in Bihar, India, is an example of success. In this project, 1.8 million women entered self-help groups and increased their household incomes by 30%.

Each year, this day will call for action from the government, universities, NGOs, private businesses, and their communities to initiate change in rural areas. The UN also wants countries to tell about their success stories and the actions taken to create data dashboards to create data-driven processes for rural development.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
