DRDO Conducts High-Altitude Trial of Integrated Life Support System for Tejas Aircraft

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully carried out a high-altitude trial of an indigenous Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) designed for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. This On-Board Oxygen Generating System-based (OBOGS) ILSS removes the necessity for traditional liquid oxygen cylinders by producing and managing breathable oxygen for aircrew during flight. The trial, executed by the Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) in Bengaluru, showcased the system’s effectiveness under extreme conditions, setting the stage for its use in other aircraft like the MiG 29K.

Key Points:

  1. Conducted by the Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL) of DRDO.
  2. Successfully tested in high-altitude conditions reaching up to 50,000 feet.
  3. Utilizes On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS) technology.
  4. Removes the necessity for traditional systems that rely on liquid oxygen cylinders.
  5. Capable of generating and managing oxygen in real-time during flight.
  6. Tested on the LCA-PV-3 aircraft, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).
  7. Evaluated under strict aero-medical standards and a variety of flight conditions.
  8. Flight clearance has been granted by the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC).
  9. Assessed for oxygen concentration, demand breathing, and aerobatic maneuvers at high altitudes.
  10. Fulfilled all specified parameters and functional requirements.
