In preparation for the upcoming general elections in April-May, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced a five-year extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) scheme. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur revealed that the extension would be effective from January 1, 2024.
The scheme, initially introduced in 2020 as a pandemic relief measure, was last extended until December 31, 2023.

PMGKAY was originally launched in 2020 to address the challenges posed by the pandemic. It provided 5 kg of free foodgrains per beneficiary per month, in addition to the subsidized foodgrain under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
As of December 2022, PMGKAY was integrated into the NFSA, offering free ration for one year.
