The IMA is a well-established military academy where officers for the Indian Army are trained. In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, the college was formed in 1932 after a military committee, led by General (Field Marshal) Sir Philip Chetwode, made a recommendation for it. When it opened in 1932, the Indian Military Academy was home to only 40 male cadets. Now, it can accommodate 1,650. The length of the cadets’ training program depends on their entry standards and ranges between 3 and 16 months. At the end of the course, IMA cadets receive a permanent military commission as Lieutenants.
Campus and Facilities:
Spanning an expansive 1,400 acres, the IMA campus is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure comprehensive training:
- Chetwode Hall: Serving as the administrative hub, it houses lecture halls, computer labs, and the central library, which contains over 100,000 volumes.
- Khetarpal Auditorium: With a seating capacity exceeding 1,500, it hosts various events and lectures.
- Somnath Stadium: An athletic facility accommodating up to 3,000 spectators.
- Salaria Aquatic Centre: Features an Olympic-sized swimming pool for aquatic training.
- Hoshiar Singh Gymnasium: A well-equipped facility promoting physical fitness among cadets.
Additionally, the campus houses the IMA Museum, showcasing artifacts of historical significance, including items from various military campaigns.
Training and Organization:
Depending on what they are qualified for, cadets at IMA go through training that varies from 3 to 16 months. It includes workouts, practicing with different weapons, developing leadership skills and taking classes. After they finish their training, cadets gain the rank of Lieutenant in the Indian Army. The academy is separated into a regiment made up of four battalions, with each battalion consisting of four companies, helping everyone maintain discipline.
Notable Alumni and Achievements:
Six alumni from the IMA have been given India’s top military award, the Param Vir Chakra. The academy has educated over 61,000 gentleman cadets and over 3,000 foreigners from more than 30 countries which reveals how well-known it is around the world. An Indian Alumni can be found as leaders of the Army, world-renowned athletes and government officials.
Motto and Ethos
The academy’s motto, “Veerta aur Vivek” (Valour and Wisdom), encapsulates its mission to instill courage and discernment in its cadets. This philosophy is deeply embedded in the IMA’s honor code and training regimen, ensuring that graduates embody the highest standards of military leadership and ethical conduct.
