
India’s domestic air passenger traffic grew
about3%
year-on-year during May. It reversed a4.5% fallthe
sector witnessed in April as a result of the grounding of cash-strappedJet Airways Ltd.,India
that led to severe capacity crunch in the sector.
According to data fromDirectorate General of Civil Aviation
(DGCA)said that the domestic carriers carried a total
of1.22 crorepassengers
in May compared with 1.19 crore passengers carried by various airlines during
the corresponding period a year ago.
IndiGo
airline:
During May,InterGlobe Aviation Ltd-promoted IndiGo airlineclocked
in a49% market
share. It carried59.80
lakh domestic passengers. In April, the airline had49.9% market share,its
highest ever since inception as a schedule carrier in 2006, as it flew a
record54.81 lakhpassengers
during the month.
Spice
Jet and Air India:
During May,SpiceJetdisplaced Air India as
thesecond largest
domestic carrier.SpiceJet, which carried18.03 lakh passengers,accounted
for 14.8% of domestic market share, whileAir
Indiacarried16.53
lakh passengers, with a13.5%of domestic market share.
