Inter-Country Adoption from Majuli — First Case Reported

In a landmark development for Majuli, a couple from the United States has adopted two siblings from the river island — the district’s first inter-country adoption case. The adoption was carried out through proper legal procedures under the supervision of the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) and relevant child welfare authorities, ensuring compliance with national and international adoption norms. After CARA’s approval, the case was forwarded to the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA), and the adoption was sanctioned only after all required verifications and procedures were completed.

The siblings had been living in a childcare institution before being matched with the adoptive parents. Officials described the development as a significant milestone for the district, highlighting improved awareness and functioning of the adoption system in Assam.
