In March 2021, during its 75th session, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2023 as the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is taking the lead in celebrating this year, working alongside various stakeholders. Millets are unique in that they can grow in arid regions with minimal resources and are resilient to climate shifts. This makes them a perfect solution for countries wanting to boost their self-sufficiency and reduce their reliance on imported grains.
#IYM2023 will be an opportunity to raise awareness of, and direct policy attention to the nutritional and health benefits of millets and their suitability for cultivation under adverse and changing climatic conditions. This year will also focus on sustainable millet production, highlighting the potential for new, sustainable market opportunities for both producers and consumers.
