Iron Dome – Air Defense System

The Iron Dome is an advanced, mobile air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries. It’s specifically designed to intercept and eliminate short-range rockets, artillery shells, and mortars that come from distances of 4 to 70 kilometers. It’s especially well-known for its ability to shield civilian areas from rocket attacks.

Key Components:

  1. Radar System – Detects and tracks incoming threats.
  2. Battle Management and Control (BMC) – Analyzes the threat trajectory and determines if the projectile is a danger to populated areas.
  3. Missile Firing Unit – Launches the Tamir interceptor missile only if the threat is deemed dangerous.

How It Works:

1. A projectile is launched towards Israeli territory.

2. The radar picks up the launch and follows its trajectory.

3. The control system figures out where it’s likely to land.

4. If it’s aimed at a populated or key location, the system deploys an interceptor.

5. The interceptor goes off near the target, neutralizing it in the sky.

Features:

  • Highly mobile and can be relocated as needed.
  • Works in urban and rural environments.
  • Can operate in all weather conditions.
  • Has a high success rate (around 90% or more, depending on the source and specific conflict).
