India has added Khichan and Menar wetlands from Rajasthan to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, taking its total to 91 Ramsar Sites as of June 4, 2025, just before World Environment Day.
Recognized under the Ramsar Convention (1971), these sites—Khichan, known for Demoiselle Cranes, and Menar, called the “bird village”, are vital for migratory birds, community conservation, and biodiversity.
This move reflects India’s commitment to wetland conservation, climate regulation, and sustainable ecosystems.
