Khilji dynasty

The Khilji dynasty (1290-1320 AD) was the second ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, established by Jalal-ud-din Khilji, who is famous for military expansion, administrative reforms, and economic policies, especially under the mighty Alauddin Khilji.

The Khilji dynasty, founded by Jalal-ud-din Khilji in 1290, ruled over the Delhi Sultanate for about 30 years, until 1320. The Khiljis were of Turco-Afghan origin, marking a shift from Turkish to Afghan rule in the Delhi Sultanate. 

Key Rulers:

• Jalal-ud-din Khilji: The dynasty’s founder, who reigned from 1290 to 1296.

• Alauddin Khilji: A formidable leader known for expanding the empire, implementing crucial administrative and economic reforms, and leading successful military campaigns.

• Qutbuddin Mubarak Shah: The final ruler of the Khilji dynasty, who met his end in 1320.

Military Achievements:

• Expansion: Alauddin Khilji spearheaded military efforts that extended the Delhi Sultanate’s reach beyond North India, even into South India.

• Mongol Invasions: The Khilji dynasty, especially under Alauddin Khilji, successfully thwarted Mongol invasions.

Administrative and Economic Reforms:

• Divine Right Theory of Kingship: Alauddin Khilji embraced the Divine Right Theory of Kingship.

• Price Controls: He introduced price controls to help stabilize the economy.

• Land Revenue Reforms: Alauddin Khilji also made significant changes to land revenue administration.

Decline and End:

After Alauddin Khilji’s death in 1316, the dynasty faced internal strife and succession issues, culminating in the murder of the last ruler, Qutbuddin Mubarak Shah, in 1320, and the rise of the Tughlaq dynasty.

The Khilji dynasty is remembered for its military prowess, administrative reforms, and the expansion of the Delhi Sultanate into South India.
