Legal Rights for Amazonian Stingless Bees

Legal Rights for Amazonian Stingless Bees

Peruvian municipalities have passed a landmark ordinance granting legal rights to Amazonian stingless bees — the first time insects have been formally recognised this way.

The bees are now acknowledged as having the right to exist and flourish, maintain healthy populations, regenerate natural cycles, live in pollution-free habitats, and receive legal representation if threatened.

Key Legal Rights and Protections

  • Right to Exist and Flourish: Inherent rights to maintain healthy, stable populations in their natural habitats.
  • Right to a Healthy Environment: Protection against pollution and the right to ecologically stable, safe climates.
  • Legal Representation: Human “guardians,” including Indigenous leaders, can represent the bees in court to sue for damages, such as habitat destruction.
  • Habitat Restoration: The ordinance mandates policies for the restoration of their ecosystems and strict regulation of pesticides.

Significance:

  • Global legal first: First time insects have been granted legal rights anywhere in the world
  • Strengthens conservation: Provides legal tools to challenge deforestation, pollution and habitat destruction
  • Advances Rights of Nature: Shifts environmental law from human-centred protection to ecosystem-centred justice
