Lila Gogoi was an influential writer, educator, and historian. He held the position of Head of the Assamese Department at Dibrugarh University and was the Honorary Director of the Department of Historical and Antiquarian Studies in Assam. In 1994, he served as the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha.
