Marathi Bhasa Gaurav Din 2023: Marathi Language Day is observed annually on February 27th in Maharashtra, India. The rules for this day have been established by the state legislature. The event commemorates the birth of illustrious Marathi Senior Poet Kusumagraj.  Kusumagraj has significantly influenced Maharashtra’s cultural landscape, and he has worked tirelessly to promote Marathi as a scientific language. The Maharashtra government decided to commemorate the mother tongue and Kusumagraj’s memory by declaring his birthday “Marathi Language Pride Day,” which became effective on January 21, 2013.

Marathi Bhasa Divas, or Marathi Language Day, is held on February 27 to commemorate the birthday of renowned Marathi poet Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, often known as “Kusumagraj.” Shirwadkar was a celebrated Marathi playwright, novelist, short story writer, poet, and humanist.

He wrote extensively on topics such as justice, liberty, and societal ills such as poverty. The day’s goal is to recognise and celebrate the brilliance of Marathi literature. Of all contemporary Indo-Aryan languages, the Marathi language has some of the earliest literature, dating to around 900 AD. After Kusumagraj passed away in 1999, the government began commemorating “Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din.” Also launched were two unique awards for people making an effort to promote Marathi literature.

The purpose of the holiday is to honour Marathi literature. Of all the contemporary Indo-Aryan languages, Marathi has some of the oldest literature. In India, it is one of the most widely used languages. After Kusumagraj died in 1999, the government instituted the “Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din.” Marathi Bhasha Day is observed enthusiastically and with great fervour. In the past, the language was also known as Maharathi, Maharashtri, Marathi, or Malhatee. To commemorate the historic occasion, various institutions host essay contests, cultural events, and writing competitions. To promote the value and heritage of the Marathi language, government representatives also organize a wide variety of events and workshops.

Vishnu Vishman Shirwdkar About

Vishnu Vishman Shirwdkar (27 February 1912 – 10 March 1999), a Marathi poet, playwright, novelist, and short story writer, wrote about freedom, justice, and the emancipation of the oppressed under the pen name Kusumgraj.

He published 16 volumes of poems, three novels, eight volumes of short stories, seven volumes of essays, 18 plays, and six one-act dramas throughout the course of a career that lasted five decades and began in India’s pre-independence era. His writings, such as the collection of lyrics known as Vishakha (1942), which encouraged a generation of Indians to join the freedom cause, are now regarded as among the greatest works of Indian literature.

For Natsamrat, he received the Jnanapith Prize in 1987, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the Marathi Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974. He also presided over the Margao Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan in 1964.
