Microsoft’s US$17.5 Billion Investment in India to Drive AI Diffusion at Population Scale

Microsoft has announced a record US$17.5 billion investment in India for 2026–2029—its largest-ever Asia investment—to strengthen AI infrastructure, population-scale AI solutions, and digital sovereignty.
The plan includes building India’s largest hyperscale AI datacenter region in Hyderabad, integrating AI into e-Shram and NCS to benefit 310 million informal workers, doubling its skilling target to 20 million Indians, and launching Sovereign Public and Sovereign Private Cloud offerings to support India’s push for data sovereignty and AI-driven inclusive growth.
Core Investment Pillars for 2026
- Hyperscale Infrastructure Expansion: Microsoft is developing its largest hyperscale cloud region in India, based in Hyderabad (India South Central), which is scheduled to go live in mid-2026. The facility will feature three availability zones and span an area roughly the size of two Eden Gardens stadiums.
- Population-Scale AI Diffusion: The investment integrates advanced AI capabilities into two major national public platforms by early 2026:
- e-Shram: Benefiting 310 million informal workers with multilingual AI chat support and automated resumé creation.
- National Career Service (NCS): Providing AI-assisted job matching and predictive analytics for skill demand trends.
- Massive AI Skilling: Microsoft has doubled its commitment to train 20 million Indians in AI skills by 2030. As part of its 2026 targets, the company is partnering with IndiaAI to skill 500,000 individuals, including students and educators, by the end of the year.
- Digital Sovereignty Solutions: To meet local regulatory requirements, Microsoft is launching Sovereign Public and Private Cloud offerings for Indian enterprises. Notably, Microsoft 365 Copilot will move to in-country data processing by the end of 2025/early 2026, ensuring data stays within India’s borders.
