Moamoria Rebellion

The Moamoria Rebellion, which took place between 1769 and 1796, was a significant uprising against the Ahom rulers in Assam. This rebellion had a lasting impact on the Ahom dynasty, leading to its decline and playing a key role in the region’s shift towards British control.

Who were the Moamorias?

The Moamorias, also referred to as Mataks, were followers of the Mayamara Sattra, a religious group that championed equality and actively sought to spread their beliefs.

What caused the rebellion?

The rebellion was the result of a power struggle between the Moamorias and the Ahom kings, as the Moamorias gained influence and began to challenge the existing social and political order.

• The rebellion led to two periods where the Ahom king lost control of the capital.
• The Ahom kingdom was weakened, making it vulnerable to Burmese invasions and British colonization.
• The Moamorias, including groups like Morans, Chutias, and other castes, formed a unified identity as Mataks during the rebellion.
• In 1805, a treaty allowed the Moamorias to establish an autonomous region, the Matak Rajya, under the office of Borsenapati.
