National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body established by the Indian government under the National Council for Teacher Education Act of 1993 (#73, 1993) and officially came into being in 1995. Its main role is to oversee the standards, procedures, and processes within the Indian education system. This council works with both central and state governments on all matters related to teacher education, with its secretariat housed in the Department of Teacher Education and the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). While it has made strides in the educational sector, the NCTE is currently grappling with challenges in maintaining high standards for teacher education and curbing the rise of substandard teacher education institutions across the country.
