Navagraha temple

The Navagraha temple, perched on the Chitrasal hills, is dedicated to the nine planets of our solar system. Inside the temple, each of these planets is symbolized by a Shivalinga, draped in vibrant colored cloths that represent their respective celestial bodies. This temple’s history stretches back to the 18th century, as evidenced by the inscriptions and records etched into its walls. It was built during the reign of Ahom King Rajeswar Singha, the son of Rudra Singha, also known as Sukhrungphaa, and it stands as one of the most cherished temples in Guwahati.

A significant portion of this temple was destroyed by an earthquake. However, it was rebuilt a few centuries later using ridged iron sheets. There’s a tank, known as Silpukhuri, located a short distance from the temple that provides a steady water supply for the devotees. This site is an important center for astrology and astronomy in Assam, and it’s believed that the ancient name of Guwahati, Pragjyotishapura, has its origins in this temple.
