Pakistan Assumes Presidency of UN Security Council for July 2025

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, Pakistan officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July. This enables Pakistan to steer the agenda and discussions of the Council on major global issues related to peace and security.

Key highlights:

• Strong Global Support: Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in January 2025 after receiving 182 out of 193 votes, demonstrating strong international confidence in its leadership.

• Role as President of it: Pakistan, as president for a month, will chair meetings, set the agenda, and facilitate negotiations on pressing international issues.

• Purposeful Leadership: The Pakistan Foreign office stated that Pakistan’s presidency will be carried out with “purpose, humility, and conviction” and is guided by the UN Charter and international law.

High-Level Events / Issues:

As part of its presidency, Pakistan will host 3 high-level meetings, as follows:

1. July 22 – Meeting titled: “Promoting Peace and Security Through Multilateralism and Peaceful Solutions.”

2. July 23 – Open Debate on Palestine, emphasizing the need for solutions to establish lasting peace in the region.

3. July 24 – UN-OIC Cooperation, emphasizing strengthened cooperation between the UN and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation.

The meetings will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, while Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad will preside over Security Council meetings.

Pakistan’s Contributions to the UN:

• This is Pakistan’s 8th time as a member of the Security Council since 1952

• Pakistan has a longstanding history of engagement with UN peacekeeping, contributing thousands of troops over the years to support international peace.

• Pakistan promotes dialogue, diplomacy, and multilateralism and wants to be characterized as an active partner in international peacebuilding.

• It will advocate for collective action to address conflicts and humanitarian crises around the world.
