Published by the Public Affairs Centre, the Public Affairs Index (PAI) uses data to assess governance in Indian states and Union Territories by assigning them ranks using a Composite Index (CI).
Key Details:
Purpose:
The PAI is designed to measure and calculate how well Indian states and union territories perform and deliver justice in social, economic, and political areas.
Methodology:
• The ranking of states and union territories is done by using the Composite Index (CI).
The assessment measures governance using three broad themes, five sub-themes, and 22 indicators.
As an example, the PAI 2020 based its measurement on three pillars, five key themes in governance, and 50 detailed indicators referring to 13 Sustainable Development Goals.
• Changes were made in the approach PAI took in many key areas for the 2022 edition.
Focus:
States are seen as key drivers of change in India, and the index tries to rate their governance based on achieving sustainability goals.
Data Source:
The PAI mostly relies on information taken from Union Government Ministries and Departments.
