The first Governor-General of free India

The first Governor-General of free India was Lord Mountbatten. He served in this role from August 15, 1947, to June 21, 1948.

Notably, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (known as Rajaji) was the first and only Indian Governor-General of free India, who succeeded Lord Mountbatten from June 21, 1948, till January 26, 1950, when India became a republic and the office of Governor-General was terminated; Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of India.
