The largest wetland in Assam

The largest wetland in Assam, and one of the largest in Asia, is Son Beel, located in Karimganj district.

About Son Beel:

Location:
Karimganj district, Assam.
Size:
Maximum length: 18 km (11 mi)
Maximum width: 10 km (6.2 mi)
Surface area: 4,388 ha (10,840 acres) in the dry season, 9,800 ha (24,000 acres) when filled

What’s truly remarkable about Son Beel is its seasonal transformation. During the winter months, it becomes a vibrant rice-growing area until March, and then it fills up with water, morphing into a stunning lake. The lake’s shallow depth means it often overflows in the rainy season, sending water into the Kushiara River through the Kakra River, which eventually flows into Bangladesh. The landscape is picturesque, with hills rising on both the east and west sides. The Shingla River, which flows from Manipur, acts as both the inlet and outlet for Son Beel. This region is famous for its fishery, making it one of the top fish producers in southern Assam. If you’re planning a visit, the rainy season from March to the start of winter is the best time, as the lake is full and offers a view that’s truly unique.
