The smallest tiger reserve in Assam

The smallest tiger reserve in Assam, and one of the smallest in India, is Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR), covering an area of approximately 79.28 square kilometers. 

  • Location: Positioned along the Brahmaputra River’s northern shore in Assam’s Darrang and Sonitpur districts.
  • Size: The primary zone of Orang Tiger Reserve encompasses 79.28 square kilometers.
  • Other Names: Often called “Mini Kaziranga” because it shares similar terrain and houses one-horned rhinos.
  • Fauna: Orang serves as a crucial habitat for the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, pygmy hog, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, and Bengal tiger.
  • Tiger Density: The reserve maintains a significant tiger population.
  • Declaration: Orang received tiger reserve status in 2016.
