
Veteran art director Thota Tharani was conferred the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by France on 13 November 2025 at Alliance Française, Chennai, recognising his four-decade contribution to Indian cinema, art, and cultural storytelling.
Tharani, known for films like Nayakan, Sivaji, and Ponniyin Selvan, joins elite Indian icons like Kamal Haasan and Aishwarya Rai in receiving this prestigious civilian arts honour.
Thota Tharani’s work spans over four decades, during which he has redefined the role of art direction and production design in Indian films. Known for creating immersive, culturally rich, and historically accurate cinematic environments, he has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema.
