Tughlaq Dynasty

The Tughlaq dynasty was a Muslim dynasty that ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1320 to 1414 AD. It was the third dynasty to rule Delhi after the Khilji dynasty. Known for their economic reforms, contribution to architecture, and ambitious projects, the Tughlaqs also laid the foundation for the legacy that followed.
Founding the dynasty
• The dynasty began with Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq (also called Ghazi Malik).
• He became the king in 1320 AD after he overthrew Khusrau Khan (the last ruler of the Khilji dynasty).
• Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq built the Tughlaqabad Fort in 1321.
Notable rulers
Muhammad bin Tughlaq; He was Ghiyas-ud-din Tughlaq’s son, some would say he more than anyone else left a lasting mark on the legacy of the Tughlaq dynasty. He had a major military expedition that expanded the various territorial acquisitions.
• Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who ruled from 1351 to 1388.
• Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud Shah Tughluq; the last sultan of the dynasty.
Legacy
The Tughlaq dynasty had major achievements, through economic reform / architectural advancements, and social, religious, and ambitious projects. Potentially one of the greatest legacies is it that its laid down an impact and direction of governance and administration.
