UPI Launches in Qatar: Indian Travellers Can Now Use UPI

UPI Launches in Qatar

In a major move to globalize India’s digital payments ecosystem, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially launched in Qatar, starting with duty-free outlets at Hamad International Airport in Doha. This makes Qatar the eighth country to accept UPI, making it easier for Indian travelers to use their payment methods abroad. This exciting development comes from a partnership between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), Qatar National Bank (QNB), and the Japanese payment gateway NETSTARS. It’s anticipated to simplify transactions for Indian visitors, lessen the need for currency exchange, and give a nice boost to Qatar’s retail and tourism industries.

What This Means for Indian Tourists

This initiative is set to significantly benefit Indian tourists, who represent the second-largest group of international visitors in Qatar. By facilitating real-time payments at retail stores, tourist attractions, and airport duty-free shops, UPI helps reduce the need for cash and currency exchange. The first to adopt this service are the Qatar Duty Free outlets at Hamad International Airport, with more merchants acquired by QNB expected to join in the upcoming months.

A Boost to Qatari Tourism and Business

From Qatar’s viewpoint, this move is also seen as a driver for economic growth. Yousef Mahmoud Al-Neama, Group Chief Business Officer of QNB, remarked, “This milestone not only enhances convenience for Indian travelers but also benefits the Qatari market by boosting the retail and tourism sectors and encouraging cashless transactions.” The introduction of UPI in Qatar is anticipated to enhance digital interoperability, simplify cross-border payments, and support the nation’s transition towards a more cashless economy.
