Australia is the smallest continent by area, with an area of roughly 7.7 million square kilometers (3 million square miles).
Sometimes people also use the name Oceania to describe a larger region that includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and other islands in the Pacific. If we used the area of Oceania as a continent, it would be a little larger than just Australia, with an area of about 8.5 to 9 million square kilometers. But in the traditional seven continent model that is largely used throughout the world, Australia is recognized as the smallest continent by area.
