AI Portal SUPACE

AI Portal SUPACE

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based portal ‘SUPACE’ in the judicial system. The SUPACE portal helps the judges in doing online research to resolve complex questions. It is a multi-disciplinary research platform for oral arguments, written submissions and judicial orders. SUPACE will make accessible data on all cases decided at various levels of courts so that judges at all levels can benefit from the wisdom of their peers.

About SUPACE

  • SUPACE is a judicial decision-making support system. It takes the judge through the facts and law of a case, asking for inputs at each step along the way.
  • It is a tool that collects relevant facts and laws and makes them available to a judge.
  • It is not designed to take decisions, but only to process facts and to make them available to judges looking for an input for a decision.
  • Initially, it will be used on an experimental basis by the judges of Bombay and Delhi High Courts who deal with criminal matters.

Significance of the SUPACE

  1. The significance of the SUPACE is its portability, so that a justice can use it without any limitations.
  2. It will produce results customized to the need of the case and the way the judge thinks.
  3. This will be time saving. It will help the judiciary and the court in reducing delays and pendency of cases.
  4. AI will present a more streamlined, cost effective and time bound means to the fundamental right of access to justice.
  5. It will make the service delivery mechanism transparent and cost-efficient.

Challenge on the SUPACE

Redundancy of certain posts after introduction of SUPACE. Since it is intended to do what the human mind can do, but much more efficiently and methodically, there is apprehension in the generation of unemployment.

E-Courts Project

E-Courts is a project conceptualized by the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, to transform Indian Courts through ICT enablement.

The Project aims at the automation of the processes in courts through the application of technology to significantly improve productivity and transparency.

Objectives of the E-Courts Project

The objective of the project is to provide efficient delivery of citizen-centric services through the improvement of e-Courts. The present status of e-Courts in the country and the critical issues involved therein are identified comprehensively. Consequently, technology-enabled, citizen-centric concepts are derived after identifying gap areas.

The E-Courts project aims to develop, install and implement Information Technology (IT) systems to support different aspects of courts as per the standard established by the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D).

The E-Courts project also aims to automate the process of filing cases in courts. Online submissions have already been started in some courts in the country which will increase transparency and ensure accessibility as the information would be available online.

The E-Courts Project envisages the introduction of a modern and transparent system to replace the existing manual process. It seeks to enhance judicial productivity, both qualitatively & quantitatively, to make the justice delivery system affordable, accessible, cost-effective, predictable, reliable and transparent.
