Ayurveda and patient safety

Ayurveda and patient safety

At first glance, Ayurveda might appear to be a useful treatment system. It has an appealing history and philosophy. It offers patients personal consultations with practitioners who take a very detailed health history and spend considerable time with each patient. Ayurvedic therapists can use hundreds of different herbs in their treatments. However, once you dig deeper, it’s clear that Ayurveda is another type of medicine that is not supported by good scientific evidence. In fact, there’s no good evidence that Ayurveda is effective for treating any disease.

What are the requirements for conducting a successful surgery?

Apprenticeship is the key: Well-trained anaesthesiologist tackles any other illnesses that the patient has before surgery can be carried out. Whether a specialist is present or not, an anesthesiologist knows how to manage any conditions related to the respiratory system, blood, and heart diseases.

Clinical judgement: Clinical judgment is a skill that every doctor is expected to possess and one that is acquired through many years of training under experienced surgeons. Training in this skill consists of managing the large number of problems that occur every day in the operating room. Accurate clinical judgment relies on the analysis of the problem, and its possible solutions, framed in the context of time pressure.

Modern medical training: Surgical training requires a theoretical and practical background in biology and medicine. The minimum education requirement is an undergraduate degree, which allows the practice of medicine through a license or certification. Additional preparation may be required depending on the surgical specialty selected.

Ayurveda and modern medicine: The debate on Ayurveda being given the status of ‘State Medical Science’ has come under criticism from a section of modern medical practitioners. They argue that it is impossible for an indigenous system of medicine like Ayurveda to incorporate surgical techniques while ignoring all the other domains of modern medicine and still perform surgery safely and effectively.

What are the problems?

Data: It is estimated that in the U.S. up to 4,000 surgical errors occur each year despite well-considered controls on who can perform surgery. Efforts to reduce this rate focus on better training. Besides professional codes, legal mechanisms have been developed to ensure safe medical practice. Ethical standards must include due consideration of the safety of patients and staff as well as all involved in the treatment.

Consumer protection act: India, as a developing economy, is witnessing rapid economic growth and modernization. Innovation in the medical sector is also taking the center stage through the creation of new drugs or medical procedures. An innovative medical practice however should not only be about bringing out new drugs or treatment methods but most importantly it should provide high-quality health services and care to each and every patient at an affordable price. Such innovative medical practices are unfortunately lacking in India.

Deepening inequality: There are many problems in India; most we hear about every day. One such problem is the quality of medical care received by a person. This is an issue that has existed for years, with people still not having equal access to quality medical care, whether they can afford it or not. India is a nation where one’s ability to pay determines his access to healthcare. There are many reasons for the deeply rooted inequalities in health care.
