Indian state to adopt GIS-enabled database of industrial areas

The Government of India has been working to revive the pandemic-hit economy through a slew of policy measures. One such measure involves the creation of a GIS-enabled database of industrial areas. Recently, the southern state of Andhra Pradesh joined 12 other states in an initiative to modernize industrial lands by digitizing land records and creating spatial boundaries for them.

About the GIS

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system that creates, manages, analyzes, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there).

This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context.

The benefits include improved communication and efficiency as well as better management and decision making.

The Geographic Information System-enabled database also has details of close to 3,000 industrial parks/clusters, as well as area-wise availability of agricultural/horticultural crops, and mineral production.

What is Industrial Information System (IIS)?

The Industrial Information System (IIS) is one of the key initiatives of the Department for the promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India under the Digital India initiative.

The key objective of the IIS is to provide a web-based, centralized tool for monitoring and management of Industrial corridors of India and to work as a decision support system for various stakeholders to support effective planning and development of industrial infrastructure.

IIS is evolving as India’s One-Stop Shop for information on all the components of the industrial ecosystem.

As part of this initiative, The DPIIT has introduced the Industrial Park Rating System (IPRS) to contribute towards building a framework for enhancing industrial competitiveness and cluster development.

Aims of Industrial Information System

The Industrial Information System (IIS) aims to provide:

  1. Information on available land for prospective investors looking at setting up units in the Country
  2. GIS Mapping of Industrial Clusters
  3. The system also holds information about existing External and Internal Infrastructure such as rail, road, air and port connectivity, and other common facilities in and around the manufacturing clusters
  4. Links to State GIS Portals and State Land Banks
