Who is Dilma Vana Rousseff?

Dilma Vana Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician who served as the 36th President of Brazil from 2011 to 2016. She was the first woman to be elected President of Brazil. Prior to her presidency, Rousseff served as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Chief of Staff from 2005 to 2010. She was also the Minister of Mines and Energy from 2003 to 2005. In 2016, Rousseff was impeached and removed from office on charges of violating budgetary laws. Prior to entering politics, Rousseff was a guerrilla fighter during Brazil’s dictatorship, and she was imprisoned and tortured for several years.

She played an active role in international discussions on climate and environmental protection, culminating in Brazil’s key role in achieving the Paris Agreement. In July 2014, Rousseff expanded Brazil’s cooperation with other countries in various regions, including the establishment of the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement with the BRICS countries. As President of NDB, Rousseff’s leadership was instrumental in the success of these initiatives.

‘Bharatmala 2’ Project:

Nitin Gadkari, India’s Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, has stated that cabinet approval for ‘Bharatmala 2’, which will address the country’s need for robust infrastructure, is expected soon. The ambitious project aims to construct over 5,000 km of expressways and highways at an estimated cost of nearly ₹3 trillion.

The Bharatmala Pariyojana, India’s largest infrastructure program, will connect more than 580 districts in the country by developing around 35,000 km of National Highway corridors.

Furthermore, the journey time is expected to be reduced by several days. At present, it takes around two to three weeks to travel to Kailash Mansarovar via Sikkim or Nepal routes.

In its latest quarterly economic update for Asia-Pacific, S&P predicted that the inflation rate would decline to 5% during the 2023-24 fiscal year, down from the current financial year’s 6.8%.
