Amit Shah highlights 70% growth in India’s dairy sector

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said India has made significant strides in the dairy sector over the past 11 years, noting that it has grown by 70 per cent during this period and is now the fastest-growing sector in the world. Milk production skyrocketed from 146 million tonnes in 2014-15 to an impressive 239 million tonnes in 2023-24, making it the fastest-growing dairy sector in the world. The government has been proactive in promoting cooperatives to empower farmers and enhance production.

Growth

During the BJP government’s 11-year tenure, the dairy sector expanded by a staggering 70 percent. Indigenous cattle milk production increased from 39 million tonnes to 50 million tonnes. Currently, the milk processing capacity is at 660 lakh litres per day, with ambitious plans to hit 100 million litres by 2028-29. Per capita milk availability has also risen significantly, from 124 grams to 471 grams daily.

Three New Multi-State Cooperative Societies

Amit Shah also informed about the government’s decision to establish three new multi-state cooperative societies for the dairy sector. The first society will focus on ‘animal feed production, disease control and artificial insemination’, the second will promote ‘developing cow dung management models’ and the third will promote ‘circular use of dead cattle remains’.

Significance of Sabar Dairy Plant

The Union Minister emphasized the impressive production capacity of the Sabar Plant, which is set to churn out 150 metric tonnes of curd, 10 metric tonnes of yogurt, 3 lakh litres of buttermilk, and 10,000 kilograms of sweets every single day. He pointed out that this facility will benefit farmers not just in Haryana, but also in neighboring states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.
