Bhortal Nritya – Folk Dance Form

Originating from the Barpeta district in Assam, India, Bhortal Nritya is a beloved and unique folk dance form. Developed by Narahari Burha Bhakat, this dance is known for its energetic rhythm, the sound of cymbals, and its enchanting circular patterns.

Performance Style:

• Typically, this dance is done in a group of about six or seven dancers, but it can also accommodate larger crowds.
• The dance is characterized by a fast-paced beat known as “Zhiya Nom”.
• Dancers use large cymbals, called bhortals, and they move in a circular motion, forming colorful shapes.
• The whole performance is beautifully complemented by Vaishnavite bhakti songs.
